Advice:
What are the chances..?

Hi there,

I recently had an unprotected sexual encounter with someone I do not know, and I am freaking out... I got down with a cold the next day, and fear that this is an early symptom, or this may just be a chance, as I have felt the cold coming the night before I even had sex. Could the early cold symptoms be that soon...?

I also would like to understand what are the chances of getting the virus if I had sex with an infected person... is it a 100% ?

I had the test 5 days after, but the report said that this is too early... dont think I can do the test again... too much pressure

Is there anything I can do or take as a precaution even if I have not been transmitted the virus...?

Hope you guys can help...

" Hello,

Your cold could be caused by numerous things.

A lot of factors influence the chances of catching the virus from an infected person... number of times you had sex with that person... type of sex (anal... oral... vaginal... etc), etc, etc. HIV is difficult to catch, as far as I understand it, so try not to worry. However, you do need to be tested, and it's great that you are taking responsible steps with that. I made the mistake of not getting tested for years, and then became very sick. Early testing means access to care and treatment, and with that, you can expect to live a reasonably normal life.

Can you get a rapid-HIV test in your area??? "

" HI as Centaur77 states you do need to get tested again, and its at 12 weeks after you had unprotected sex to get a proper result, i know the wait can seem for ever, Its not 100 per cent you would get HIV even if the other person was Pos however as you know there is a risk and therefore you do need to know , the worst thing you could do is try to ignore it, its not the end of the world just seems it, but life does go on and i worry about other things now more than hiv, were before i knew i was obsessed in not knowing, all the best for your results but you will be fine, XX "

" Seroconversion can also be a standard 3-month window, and I have gone through all the volounteer classes and training for pre/post testing and it is good to initially get tested every 3 months twice and once more 6 months later, and if still neover a two year period--negative, you are pleasantly in the clear! And, if you are regularly sexually active, bi, straight, or otherwise, a test every 6 months is paramount with the psycho's out there that are not so forthcoming. Because of Master's work and juggling an art carrer and two jobs and president of my college assembly, I too did not get tested for two yrs--and it was getting really sick that illuminated my situation.
