I just found out that I am HIV positive. I have been gathering all sorts of information and everything so I can be as educated about this as possible. But one of the first concerns that came to my mind is what precautions, having to do with everyday life, do I have to factor in to my life so that I can protect my friends and everyone else out there?

I got diagnosed earlier this year, and remember thinking those same things about whether or not I would need to protect my flatmate as we are living in the same space. However, HIV is very difficult to catch, and it cannot be caught through sharing the same living space with someone. The only precaution you should take is when you sleep with someone, i.e. condom :-)
Hope you're doing OK. :)

I think your worries are normal and now you realize how underinformed the general public is about HIV! All of the above replies are correct. I even go as far as keeping a couple pr of latex gloves in boot of my car to protect ME in case I need to help somebody else that is in trouble--as with a weakened immune system, it is much easier for you/us to catch things from other people, i.e. Hep B,C, etc. The CDC has updated info on oral sex finally, stating although it is hard to transmit HIV this way--it is not out of realm of happenstance. I was one of those that had to have contracted it orally, as I had some dental issues at the time--a perfect apthway for any pathogen. You will be fine. Science has come really far and we also have our predecessors to thank that have fought big PHARMA to make HIV meds more available/clinical trials, etc.
