I am a 29yrs old woman I got GBS last Dec of 08 I had a very sever case i was on life support for 4 months and they had the tubes down my throat and I ended up getting pneumonia so they changed the tubes I ended up getting pneumonia again about 2 weeks later. They ended up putting in a trake which helped, I have to be honest i don't remember much they had me on some very strong meds the pain was like nothing I have ever experienced my whole body felt like I was skinned and burned what happened was my nerves disinitegrated and I was a paraplegic for about 2 months I had the IVNG I think that's what it's called they had the Red Cross come in and do it it was a total of 6 treatments I got worse before I got better it was a very scary time for my family the other problem they were dealing with was my blood pressure was through the roof and they couldn't control it. But I'm home now I have just recently decided to take a few weeks off from P.T.& O.T. I have hit a plateau and I'm exhausted all the time I am also having a lot of anxiety and I'm not sleeping that good. I was just wondering if anyone else might be dealing with the same or similar issues I am. I'm on some meds to help control some of these issues and I know some of my meds cause this but I just need feed back on other ways people are dealing with this. I know everyone says it's going to take time but I have no answers as to how long and the waiting is killing me. All thoughts would be very helpful:)

I was diagnosed with GBS in 2/09 but not as severe as your case. My neurologist did inform me that those severe cases usually can take up to 2 years to completely recover. Some fellow GBS patients I met in OT/PT with severe cases have said they recover to a point where they can return to their daily activities but with continued side effects such as tingling, muscle weakness or occasional pain but some people have made a full recovery. I know its frustrating when your body wont do what your mind wants it to but focus on the progress you've made so far and not the setbacks. Also keeping a journal will be helpful. Best of luck.

Hi, sorry to hear about your situation. I had GBS 15 years ago and the treatment was plasma pharisis (misspelled i'm sure) Like you, I had a severe case and was on a respirator for 4 months and and had pnemonia 2 times as well. The real turn around for me was when I went into a rehab facility. I was there for only 1 month although I was told I would be there for 3 months. I found that a full day of therapy really helped. Especially aqua therapy in the pool. When I left the rehab center I walked with 2 canes for about another month. Overall I would say that after my release from the hospital it took me 3-4 months to fully recover. I know it's tough and your depressed but you will see improvement.. Just hang in there and continue your therapy. Surround yourself with friend and family. Best of luck.
