Hello to my wonderful support group! ;) I had my labs done this week as I have been feeling a little off.

Here are my results in chronological order since the thyroid storm:

August 23, 2009
T3 uptake 50.07 (25-36)
T4 22.2 (5.4-12.0)
FTI 11.12 (1.25-4.55)
TSH 0.03 (0.4-5.3)
FT4 5.79 (0.8-1.6)
T3 Free 9.35 H

I was put on Propanolol 40 mg, four times a day, PTU 200 MG, every 4 hours (total 1200mg), and iodide 1 hour after the PTU.

Exactly one week later, my labs were:

FT4 2.40 (0.8-1.6)
T3 Uptake 38.08 (25-36)
T4 9.4 (5.4-12.0)
FTI 3.58 (1.25-4.55)
TSH 0.03 (0.4-5.3)

I was lowered to PTU 450 mg, divided daily, Propronalol 40 mg, three times daily.

9/22/2009
T3, Free 390 range (230-420)
T4, Free 1.0 range (0.8-1.8)

" Okay, forget it. Here are my labs from this week:
11/04/2009
T3, Free 473 (range 230-420)
T4, Free 1.1 (range 0.8-1.8)

My T3 appears high. Any suggestions to bring this down? "

" Aim your Free T4 to mid range and your Free T3 should (ought) to move down mid ranges. For some people, low FT4 makes the FT3 go up.

" So, should he lower my PTU more or increase the PTU? I'm on 50 mg daily, and I divide the dose. thanks so much! "

" Remember, ATD's are meds that are used to lower thyroid hormone levels so, whenever we want our thyroid hormone levels to increase,
we decrease the dose of those meds.

Everyone has his/her own "best place" in the thyroid hormone range....just like each of us has his/her own "best place" in the range of shoe sizes available.

Most people wear the most common shoe size so-o-o-o, since we most often didn't know our "best place" thyroid hormone level before Dx, it's a good idea to dose so we get to the most common level at which most people feel best.

That level is mid-range FT4, at least (FT3 usually falls into place when we get the FT4 in the right place)

Then, you "hand" at that mid-range FT4, at least to see how it "fits"....if you have any symptoms, then you tweak your dose just a little to "try on" levels "nearby" in the range.

50 mg PTU (divided into two doses) is a common maintenance dose (maintenance dose is what peeps take once their levels get in-range at hopefully their best place.

Since your levels are low and you feel "off", you most likely would be like the rest of us....feeling better at mid-range FT4, at least.

You've been "hanging around" FT4 1.0 - 1.1 since September....that provides good info.....50 mg PTU looks like it would keep you there so, definitely, lower that dose to bring up your FT4 level.

If you want to be conservative (slow and steady wins the race), can you divide your pills so you could take 37.5 mg total per day?

Then, definitely lab within 4 wks.....if your FT4 didn't get back to mid-range, at least, try 25 mg PTU total.

Hope this makes sense and you feel better soon! "

" typo alert

I meant to say "hang" at the level to see how it "fits", not "hand" - lol "

" Thank you so much! I was thinking my endo will probably drop my dose again. he mentioned taking me off altogether.... so, we'll see on Monday. I will def ask if 1/2 a pill daily, divided can be recommended. But I'll see what he recommends first. Again, thanks so much! "

" If the three-quarter pill (37.5 mg) was divided into two doses, taking the bigger chunk at nighttime when thyroid is most active, would be good.

cd explained why taking less PTU to help the thyroid hormones to come up and then the Free Ts will balance out correctly.

" As I was lowering my PTU there was a time when I was on 37mg of PTU per day split 3 times. My meds were in 100mg pills so it became difficult to take just 37mg. I got a pill cutter and had to cut it into 1/8 ths in order to do it. PTU crumbles really easy...there were times when it seemed I was taking crumbs. Cd is right...slow and steady wins the race.Big Hugs...Kathy "
