Weight and Grave's

I have been diagnosed for about a year and a half. I didn't get what I would consider the 'good' side effect of weightloss. I just didn't get fatter. Then when I was put on PTU, of course, I gained weight. My doc was surprised which I found kind of amazing since when my thyroid and metabolism were in hyper-drive I was still obese, shutting it down certainly wouldn't do a person any favors.
Has anyone looked into bariatric surgery (lap-band or even gastric bypass) after being diagnosed and going through Grave's treatment? I'm curious what docs would say. I can't imagine it would be a terrible idea.
Thanks, Em

" Funny, I've often wondered about elective surgery while having Graves'......surgery does put significant stress on the body and stress isn't the best thing to have when having Graves'.

To me, this is definitely a topic you'd want to research....and also discuss with your doctor.

Sometimes, we have to make educated decisions to make sure the benefits outweigh (no pun intended :) the risks. "

" I gained weight while hypER. I was strange, my symptoms where reversed. I gain weight no matter if I am hypER or hypO.
If your docor knows you have an autoimmune disease they will most likely not do the gastric bypass. I am not sure about the lap-band. I would love to have the lap-band, althoug the doctors say that I am not obese I am over weight by 75 pounds and it hurts to walk or stand.
I also have Asthma so it makes it hard for me to exersize to loose the weight.
