Tomorrow Is D-Day for me on RAI

I just had my doctors appointment for my Thyroid Gland today with my new doctor and found out through testing that I do have Graves Disease. Mine is bad and causing all my issues which is Graves or Hyper symptoms. I am not Hypo.

We also decided to have me get Radioactive Iodine Treatment tomorrow at 2 PM or I-131 Treatment. I told him I was ready for it and lets get it going. He decided to up my anxiety medication by 2 times and my BP or Heart medication Toporolol from 100 mg to 150 mg a day to try to control the symptoms. If they don't work to control my symptoms then they will either up those meds again or try somethings else. I also might require a night or 2 of 3 in the hospital untill my body settles down from it.

My first doctor I had for Thyroid told me I did not have graves disease and he based that upon a T-131 test he did, but this new doc thru the thryoid uptake and scan showed that I do have Graves Disease so he said the treatment options were limited between RAI & Surgery and RAI was the best option. The Success Rate is pretty good he said with hardly anyone showing back up with problems.

What should I expect now and how soon after I take the Pill should I start to notice changes??? They also said after 5 or 6 days I could take a small dose of Methimazole of about 20 mg to help my symptoms out.

Well this is my later news and I have felt real bad the past 3 days but a slight cold may be adding to that also.

Thank you,
Bobby

" A Monday morning progress report.

After a rough Saturday and better Sunday. Today is an OK day but still feeling so so regarding the thyroid and now cold I have. The cold never hit hard except a scratchy and runny nose.

As for my thyroid issue, I am still having some heat pounding issues but not bad, breathing issues are still there from time to time, still have the tremors and shakes, light headed from time to time and today is a not so good day at the moment. It cycles from good to bad and back.

Today will be 6 days since I took the RAI Pill and I know the 2nd to 3rd week is when things start to get better. I wish it was that 2nd week now. I also started Methimazole yesterday back at 20 mg a day. I do have a curious question to ask. Why is it they started me back on Methimazole since I had The RAI treatment allready???

" Hi Bobby

Sorry you're still having a rough time.....it is to be expected right after RAI.

As your thyroid dies off, all the hormones are being released into your body.....this will bring on hyPERthyroid symptoms and will cause a temporary increase in your thyroid hormone levels.

That is why the docs are having you resume Methimazole for awhile.....truly, it would be nice if they checked your levels before telling you to start meds but, most likely you do need them.

One of the worst aspects of RAI is the speed, or lack thereof, with which the thyroid dies off.

While your thyroid is in this state of "transition", your levels will also be in a state of "transition".....that is why it will take some time before you feel well.

Hopefully, your doctors will be ordering labs for you on a regular basis to monitor your ever-changing levels and will dose you accordingly.

Eventually, once your thyroid dies off enough, it won't be producing all the hormones your body needs to function.

You will then need thyroid hormone replacement medication.

There's no quick fix to Graves' disease.....slow and steady wins the race.

Feel better!

Carol "

" Yes, as cd says...do you have your latest labs? I have read some poeple from other thyroid boards who have had an RAI done, go for 'weekly' labs to find out where they are at with their thyroid levels while they have been put on ATD. The ATD will be just in case one doesn't get a thyroid storm while their thyroid is dying off. Once their thyroid levels have crashed, they get taken off of the aTD and put on a replacement med.

" Hello Bobby,
You are taking the meds again because you are about to go through thyroid storm. It is good yoru doctor gave it to you.
Now I am not going to lie you are in fro a rough ride here soon so those meds are going to be good for you.
You are going to have some good days and some bad days for a few months. Then you will have good months and bad months comming as your thyroid slowly dies little by little over the next few years.
When you get replacment meds make sure you do not take them the day you have labs, it will give a false reading. It is best to get labs done in the morning and take your replacement meds with you so you can take it right after labs are done. Another thing, DO NOT allow your doctor to dose you on TSH ever!! That will put you hypO faster than anything and you do not want that at all!
Take care and if you ever need help just ask.

Hugs
Angel "

" Bobby, I am listening to all the comments given about your RAI ! I can't believe you are going through such a hard time - this is not at all the way it was told to me. Like it was a simple procedure and its easy to adjust. I tell you - you have to do your own research. I pray you do not get Thyroid Storm after all this work you have done. I also hope you are able to function. Are you able to go to work? We are all thinking and praying for you ! Cindy R "
