I just had my doctors appointment for my Thyroid Gland today with my new doctor and found out through testing that I do have Graves Disease. Mine is bad and causing all my issues which is Graves or Hyper symptoms. I am not Hypo.
We also decided to have me get Radioactive Iodine Treatment tomorrow at 2 PM or I-131 Treatment. I told him I was ready for it and lets get it going. He decided to up my anxiety medication by 2 times and my BP or Heart medication Toporolol from 100 mg to 150 mg a day to try to control the symptoms. If they don't work to control my symptoms then they will either up those meds again or try somethings else. I also might require a night or 2 of 3 in the hospital untill my body settles down from it. My first doctor I had for Thyroid told me I did not have graves disease and he based that upon a T-131 test he did, but this new doc thru the thryoid uptake and scan showed that I do have Graves Disease so he said the treatment options were limited between RAI & Surgery and RAI was the best option. The Success Rate is pretty good he said with hardly anyone showing back up with problems. What should I expect now and how soon after I take the Pill should I start to notice changes??? They also said after 5 or 6 days I could take a small dose of Methimazole of about 20 mg to help my symptoms out. Well this is my later news and I have felt real bad the past 3 days but a slight cold may be adding to that also. Thank you, Bobby Posted on 11/02/09, 02:11 pm |

Bobby,
I also have severe graves, however meds could have helped for me but I had allergic reactions to both Methimazole and PTU. Have you tried these? I had RAI On October 21st and I still feel terrible but doc said it takes atleast 1-3 months to feel better or go hypo. You will go hypo and take meds for that. I had no bad side effects I just had a sore neck for 3 or 4 days. Beta blockers and ativan help. I had to stay away from my husband for 2 days and 5 days away from my kids. I wish you luck and I hope you feel better sooner rather than later. HUGS!!!

Hi Mar1976
I was on 40 mg a day of Methimazole and found out it only did a little to control my symptoms but nothing major. My symptoms actually started to get worse and right now they are trying to keep my symptoms under control and that could end up being some hospital time after I take the Pill tomorrow. They said it takes 1 to 3 months to feel much better but I should notice improvement within 2 to 3 weeks they said. One patient I was talking to told me he felt better after 3 days but it took 2 weeks for him to get well enough to go back to work. I will ask about ativan with my doc tomorrow again. Thanks Mar and HUGS

So sorry to hear that the meds did not work. How long were you on them? They can take a month or so to work.
RAI was no big deal for me and around here they do not hospitalize anyone for it even cancer patients that take more radiation. They want you away from everyone here. It is different everywhere. It should not give you any really bad side effects. I had to go on a low iodine diet for a week prior. Get some lemon drops for the sour taste for your saliva glands. Read info on line. Beta blocker help I am on atenolol and it slows down my heart rate.

I do have a question I was wondering about regarding RAI. Why would my doctor and another doctor tell me to take Methimazole at a low dose for a couple weeks after doing RAI? is it another way to help on the symptoms of the Lingering Graves diesease? I am suppose to start it about 4 days after for just a few weeks or more. Just puzzled as to why they would do this?

Having RAI promotes the release of the thyroid hormones stored in your thyroid - thus, your levels often increase right after the procedure.
Taking Methimazole will help bring down those levels. Best of luck to you!

Good Luck to you! My thoughts are w/ ya. I have not had RAI..On the positive side .. ..I think men do alot better w/ RAI than women from. I know men personally that have had RAI for Graves and they are living a normal life. I really do think RAI effects women differently mayb b/c of hormones etc. The reason they ask u to take Methamazole after rai is b/c u can still b hyper until ur thyroid dies. Once it does do u can also still have hyper symptoms as they try to regulate ur replacement meds ..RAI does not cure u from Graves (i read in ur other post u said the dr said he was goin to cure u) ever after RAI u still have Graves. I wish u all the best Keep us posted on ur progress !!
