muscle cramps and tight muscles - hyper?

Here is an update ...
I was off all meds from Oct. 2 until Oct. 10th. I started back on 2.5mg twice a day for one week then went to 2.5mg once a day. I noticed that the first week back on meds, my symptoms were more noticible then than when I was not taking any meds. I assume it was the time needed for the meds to get out of my system and then the effects of them re-entering. The following week was almost symptom free. Now, this past weekend I have had terrible muscle cramps. They would come out of nowhere but be very sharp. I couldn't even use a can opener. Now, I am having tightening in the back of my thighs and occasionally lower back. Its as though I have done a major work-out but haven't. Its even painful on my knees. With my job, I am up and down on the floor a lot. This is real painful. Am I possibly changing too much to hyper or is it hypo? There isn't really a burning sensation nor throbbing. The cramping is actually subsiding but the tightness isn't. Posted on 10/29/09, 11:10 am |

Well, I have determined that I was/am hyper. I have increased me meds and my symptoms have deminished. I was also having extreme headaches and thus started monitoring my BP more closely and discovered that my dystoli reading was elevated so I have also gone back on my beta blocker and am feeling much better.
Thanks for everone's input. Its nice to know I am not alone.

Hi Carla,
This time I had it in my lower back, the back of my thighs, knees, elbows, and hands. The worst was my thighs and knees. To complicat things, I also have a tilted vertibrae that is leading to degenerative scoliosis - what fun! the hyperness of the thryoid and stress really runs havoc on that. I hope you feel better soon. Increasing my meds has helped.

I had/have same issues when hyper. I think some of the symptoms can be present with both hypo and hyper.

muscle aches can be either hyPER or hyPO.
shortness of breath is often hyPO I have a suggestion for everyone. Anytime a new symptom presents, Google the symptom and hyPOthyroidism.....you will most likely find your symptom on one of the many lists of hyPOthyroidism symptoms. If you don't find it on a hyPO list, do the same thing only use hyPERthyroidism. I was having "air hunger" issues when I was hyPO - I found this site and, lo and behold, there is was http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.c... Please, everyone....do NOT adjust your dose without having labs done prior. Since hyPO and hyPER symptoms can occur whenever we change our dose, it is vital to confirm our actual levels before changing a dose.

I am not sure how common or uncommon, but when I was untreated with hyper, I was horribly out of breath. Beta blockers getting my heart in better control helped with that, but not completely.

For so many of us with GD, going by both lists of hypO/hypER symptoms as an aid to see where our problems lie is beneficial. We are all so different with our symptoms and knowing when we are hypO or hypER. What we have to do is recognize in being proactive to know which ones we get to get an idea of where we're at.
I've had thyroid disease for such a long time, both hypO and hypER ends, that with having had GD for over nine years; I can tell now based on my symptoms without looking at my labs where I am currently at. {{{hugs}}} :-)
