I'm trying to change what I eat for breakfast, i eat too much sugar. I have yoplait cherry orchard yogurt, a stick of cheese, a glass of soy milk, and two packets of honey nut oatmeal. i want to replace the yogurt with something else since it has 27 grams of sugar in it. i'm looking for something with a higher protein content to keep me from getting hungry so soon. any suggestions?

I use stevia all the time. It's very sweet, so you don't need much. I've gotten used to the taste, so it's fine to me.

After going gluten and casein free two years ago, I found that gluten-free grains didn't work so well for me--too great of a hit on my blood sugar. So now I eat more of a paleo diet and that leads to untraditional but very satisfying breakfasts. I eat some form of meat--bacon, pork sausages, turkey sausage, leftovers, canned salmon. I also eat veggies (greens, green beans, broccoli, cabbage, carrots whatever is leftover or quick to cook) often in chicken or beef broth (sometimes with coconut milk). If I have a taste for something sweet, I'll eat one of my homemade banana almond flour muffins. I realize that this may be more cooking than some like to do, I'm mostly posting to give alternative ideas. At first, it seemed odd to eat "lunch" and "dinner" foods at breakfast, but not anymore. My daughter who was 4 when we made this switch had the hardest time learning which meal was called what since there wasn't too much difference in the kinds of food we'd eat.
If you are looking to be satisfied longer, try adding in meats (red meat is higher in purines so leaves one satisfied longer) and fats--coconut oil is particularly good for the thyroid and can be added to a smoothie, yogurt, cereal, toast, etc. Nuts are also high in fat and have some protein. My husband makes a grain-free granola by mixing different nuts, dates, raisins, dried apricots, and using coconut milk, honey, and a smidge of vanilla as "the milk". Just some ideas. Jane

thanks a lot, i think i do remember being more satisfied when i would have lunch or dinner for breakfast, so i think i'll go back to that also. i hate giving up yogurt, but i'm going to have to if i want to continue with soy milk (which has 16 grams of sugar per 8 oz glass). i might give up the oatmeal too and substitute the kashi cereal for that, i'll have to see how things work today.

Great idea JES and mzht!:
I do the exact same thing. I don't necessarily eat traditional things for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It is whatever I want and if it's along on the healthy side that I can have and eat without any problems, that's fine too. {{{hugs}}} :-)

yeah i keep hearing things about it but i'm just not sure, my doc has thyroid problems too and she said he hasnt' heard anything about it bothering thyroid function, so i don't know what to believe. i didnt' notice any difference when i stopped drinking it, so i don't know. maybe i'll have hard-boiled eggs in the morning, eggs are definitely protein. i stopped eating them scrambled because they bothered my stomach for some reason.

Eggs make me lose the hunger pangs the longest and they use to bother me too until I started taking the yolks out. Now I just scramble the egg whites or make an egg white omelet and they don't bother me.

Some mornings I will eat plain brand flakes with regular milk. When I eat high sodium foods I tend to get heart palpitations after but when I eat brand flakes it makes me feel really good! I also eat the regular grits, eggs and toast and that also makes me feel really great!

During the week I eat fruit and drink coffee (my only vice!) I can't seem to give up coffee, but have cut way down on my consumption and drink only one cup (sometimes I use a pretty big cup, LOL!) On the weekends, when I have more time, I will saute some veggies like mushrooms, onion and bell pepper in olive oil and then add in some egg whites and scramble them up.
I take nuts, like almonds, walnuts or brazil nuts to work and snack on them when I get a chance for a mid morning snack, and have an apple and raw veggies for lunch. Dinner I usually have some kind of lean, low-sodium chicken something or other to eat.
