Hi! I'm new here and to grave's. I was trying to get pregnant for almost year, and then was diagnosed with graves. I am curently taking PTU which my endocrinologist told me was safe, but I just went to a reproductive endocrinologist who told me it is not. Anyone on here try getting pregnant while on meds? Is it safe? Is there a "better" med to be on? Any advice? Thanks!! I am so frustrated!!!

" Hi graffiti, I am reltively new here and to Graves as well and I am going through exactly the same thing that you are. I went for a pre-conception check up with my GP in March and that's when I was diagnosed. I am now on PTU and my endo assures me that it is safe to take while pregnant. He also told me it would be ok to take Tapazole/Methimizole but I was not comfortable with that from different things I have read. What I have learned from other wonderful people here at DS is that you really have to be your own best advocate when it comes to your doctors and what you are and are not comfortable with. It is VERY frustrating, I completely understand where you are coming from! Something that really helped me become a more informed patient was Mary Shomon's book The Thyroid Hormone Breakthrough. It had great info on Graves and fertility, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Hang in there! "

" Your question about a high risk obgyn. Altho Im not lookin to have childern right now my endo& obgyn said it would be best to see a high risk obgyn. The research ive done on PTU & Methamazole. Ptu is safe during a preg methamazole is safe in very lo doses such as 2.5mg. If I remember correctly both pass thru breastmilk. Its more dangerous not to be treated during a preg, Good Luck and keep us posted "
