As we all know Mandi just had her thyroid removed. For some reason I hadnt thought about that as an option. As a result I have not done any research on it up until now and Ive done that just in the last day. From what Ive learned so far it appears to be a much wiser choice to get your life back on track in a very short period of time. Im wondering why more people have not made this choice above RAI. I understand that there are risks but as we know, there are no matter what you choose. I would like to learn more about this...Kathy

I have one eye bigger than the other due to Graves, and I did RAI and it didn't change, so it isn't all doom and gloom. Some people with TED don't get it bad and some do, with RAI or not.

My eyes ar much better after RAI.
I only had slight problem with one eye really but some soreness and scratchy eyes. My Dr insist that it will not hurt to have RAI with TED and it will get better after it. But thats just my Nuro Dr. who does RAI not my Endo. He said the finding are getting better with RAI treatment with TED!!! And it will change soon in the Medical books to advise others as such. Its gotten better immediately fro me and I have had no more problems since. Kelly

Kelly...the reason they say that is because they put you on prednisone. You may have to be on it for months, and the doses are reflective to how sever your TED is. Prednisone is helpful..Ive had it...but it is very hard on your body. Why would anyone go that route if they dont have to. If you have any TED a TT is really the only way to go, thats assuming you dont have other issues where RAI is critical to have. In my opinion any doc that says RAI is safe for TED should be fired! My opinion is based on hours and hours of research. I have also come to the point with my research that a TT is the only way to go period ( as a permanent treatment ) unless you have cancer of the thyroid or other life threatening issues and intolerance to ATDs. This is just my opinion, I dont even really know yet if I have that choice. If I have to pay for a TT chances are I wont be getting one...wouldnt that just figure..lol

To answer your question...I have researched both TT and RAI and the effects of Calcium levels DROOPING after Both. So I went on Calcium/Vitimin D3 after RAI first off taking one capsule a day in the morning but changed it to a night time dose now as it interferes with synthroid if taken together. Nothing should be taken with synthroid, not even food. I will know when I go for bloods today as to whether I now have too much Calcium or sufficient. I will let you know. Take Care Debs

Personal opinion here kathy....
If you had to go for Steroids by IV then I would go the TT route. As I said...personal opinion after researching a lot, seeing other people histories and results. I honestly dont bleieve it makes it worse but if the TED is severe (or has been) then I would go the TT route. Debs
