I am new to this group and was diagnosed with graves last April. I was put on Methimazole which seemed to work ok for about 3 months. Then I had blood work done and doc said my dosage was to high and I was now hypo. He dropped my dosage and about 2 weeks later I again became hyper, I have had increaces of the medications but I am still having hyper symptoms, but I am gaining weight, When I was diagnosed in April my weight was 98 lbs I am now 126 lbs and gaining.
I am hot all the time and sweat constantly, I have to change my cloths several times daily. I am so tired of feeling like this I'm tired and can't control my emotions, I shake and have not regained my muscle tone even though i am gaining weight. Is it normal to be gaining weight when your hyper?? Also my taste for food has totally changed... I always loved veggies and salads.... Now all I eat is rice krispies with sugar and french toast with maple syrup..all I want to eat is sweets. and I have never liked sweets before.....I am afraid of the other treatments but this one doesn't seem to be working very well any advce or help would be greatly apprectated ...Sorry for rambeling.

" Sorry to hear you're having such troubles!

It's hard to tell what is going on with you without lab results....could you post your last few lab results (including ranges)? The most important labs are FT4 (T4, free), FT3 (T3, free) and TSH.

You also want to note the date of the labs and the MMI (methimazole) dose you were taking at the time of the labs - it would be great if you could note the symptoms that corresponded to the labs as well.

ATD's (antithyroid drugs) can be an effective way to treat Graves' disease - it's important for you to monitor yourself as described above. Even if you choose the other treatment options, you'd still need to monitor yourself.

And, yes, some people gain weight when hyPER.

I'll look for your next post.....we can help you better once you share your labs, etc.

Hope you feel better soon! "

" Paula,

I'm so sorry to hear that things have been really tough for you. I know exactly what you mean about not being able to control your emotions, shaking, and gaining weight all at the same time! Your story sounds exactly like mine - only 5 years ago. Are you a younger Graves patient? I'm just curious because I know that younger GD patients, myself included, gain weight more easily because we are missing some essential fatty acids and our metabolisms are also up extremely high since we are young, which causes us to eat more; therefore, gain weight.

What dosage of MMI are you currently on? "
