How long do I have to be on Beta-Blockers?

I have to admit that I am starting to feel better most days. However I also admit that taking ptu 3x's a day + the Beta-Blockers is becoming tiresome.
So when will my Endo decide to start weaning me from the Beta-Blockers? Are they a lifetime (- a possible remission) like the anti-thyroid medication or will I eventually get off of them? I don't see the Endo until September because my Free t-4 was in the normal range and believed I could go 3 months without seeing him. Posted on 06/30/09, 08:06 pm |

I've been on ATDs for six years now, taking them three times a day. I have gone on and off the beta blockers twice now.
Yes, I know the feeling, I want to scream at times! It is very tiresome to be on meds. But it is just as tiresome to take vitamins/supplements twice a day too. Let's hope remission can happen for you. I was able to go on a teensy weensy crumb of a dose - 1.875 mg per day for over a year before stress hit me and I went back up to 5 mg per day. Take care... :-)

I was on PTU three times a day and a beta blocker as well when I was first dignosed with Graves. My endo took me off the beta blocker after three months. I continued with PTU for another 13 months and then was weaned off. Unfortunately, remission was not in the cards for me. After to weeks all the Graves symptoms returned in force. So now I am back on PTU 3 times a day. I'm looking into TT because I can't live my life this way. Everyone's story is different. Good luck!

I was diagnosed with GD in 1994 and had RAI in 1996. I have had trouble with A Fib so they put me on beta blockers right away, and I've been on them ever since; I don't mind. I'd much rather be on them than end up in the hospital again because of my heart. GD is hard on the ole' ticker.........hang in there and have a great day!!! I pray you will go into remission; many people have.
Hugz, Mary

Mary has the right idea. Yes, it can be tiring, but I'd rather be on the safe side than to do without any meds and/or vits/supplements for the moment.
Take care... :-)

Ive been off PTU since January. So far my remission is holding. From what I have read...the longer you stay on ATD's the better your chances are of coming off meds and having remission stick. Also. a lot depends on your antibody count. I was on PTU for 15months but went hypo by the 4th month. On short study trials they ( med research) has determined that how you respond to meds vs remission should show itself by the 6th month mark. I'll try to dig that study up.
http://qjmed.oxfordjournals.org/cg... http://www.eje-online.org/cgi/cont... http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed... My feelings are that if ATD's work and your able to keep your thyroid...that would be the best case scenario other than remission. Ablation is a serious decision but it all depends on how severe your symptoms are. If my remission doesn't stick...I have 2 choices..continue on ATD's or TT. Big Hugs...Kathy

Thank You! I have a little viral cold right now so I can't tell if it's the virus or the Graves' but I keep thinking of calling and asking to lower my PTU. I'll see how I feel next week.

I've noticed that whenever I've had a cold in the past, my heart rate goes up a bit.
Hope you feel better soon...! :-)

Once ur levels are under control they should start weaning you off (make sure they wean u and not stop u ) THey give the beta blockers for 2 reasons to control the heart rate and the symptoms like tremors

PS Careful w/ those 3month app's and a Endo saying ur (IN RANGE) its really better to get labs every 6-wks even if u are in range b/c the dose that u may b on now can make u hypo in 3months
