" Have not had a thyroidectomy. Mine's not very bad and having a thyroidectomy would make me an automatic hyPOthyroid which I don't want to do if I can help it. "

" I had a thyroidectomy two years ago...terribly uncomfortable beforehand as I had to wait ages, it was more inside than out and was massive, so the surgeon said. However, the result was excellent - WOW, to swallow, breathe properly and smell again..*S*..........& so far have had no more troubles..everything has settled well... "

" What helps a lot is getting as much information as you can. Also, have NO FEAR in asking questions. This is your health and the results of the surgery or deciding not to have it will impact your life.
ALWAYS GET A SECOND OPINION!! There is no reason to hem and haw about it. This is NOT about what works for the surgeon or what's convienient for him or her. It's about you and what makes you feel comfortable.

Two books that helped me make a more informed decision :"You: The Smart Patient" and The Complete Thyroid Book". These are excellent resources. Don't spend more time researching your next auto purchase or home purchase than you give to a life altering decison such as this.

I am now stepping down from my soap box. "

" i had my thyroid out in October . i had to have a second op a week later for a massive abscess that formed in the space were the thyroid was . i was real poorly .
the surgeon said he could`nt understand why it happened .
but now i am a couple of months on i am feeling brilliant.
i had to have my thyroxine upped again and give it time to work but it's going well.
i have off days still but not many.
with the thyroid gone i can eat breath and not feel like i am choking all the time or being strangled .
even though at first i was poorly i dont regret having it done.
hugs joanne "
