Total thyroidectomy for goitre... confused

had a TT on thursday 14th April. I was extremely scared, in fact terrified. This was to remove a 5cm goitre that was blocking my windpipe and causing discomfort, all my bloods had been normal for years.
It is now 48 hours after surgery and I have to say I have noticed some major differences in my wellbeing and I'm not sure if I am imagining it? I had been having palpitations for around 3 years (about the same time as my goitre took a turn for the worse) chest discomfort, severe weight gain, and aching joints in the last few months. From 48 hours ago all breathlessness has gone, my joints no longer ache, I have not had one palpitation (usually have around 5 per day at least) and all chest discomfort has gone in fact I feel more calm and relaxed than I have done in 3 years. I am not sure if this is still the effects of the anaesthetic making me relaxed but I can't imagine that I would feel this different, better from an anaesthetic. But, my bloods were all normal. I don't really understand why I feel so good? I have taken two doses (2 days) of levothyroxine at 175 micrograms but this couldn't be taking effect yet. Anyway apart from the obvious pain from the wound I hope I continue to feel great, given that I never wanted the operation! Posted on 04/16/11, 01:53 pm |

hiya . i had my tt about two years ago and it was the best thing i ever did. i couldnt breath ,i couldnt eat, and i couldnt sit with my chin down as i used to feel like i had someones hand tight around my throat costantly.my neck is now slim and it used to be massive.i was ill a long time before i found out i had hashimotos and my thyroid weiged 3 pound when they took it out.i was very ill indeed.i feel like a new woman now in regards to this. i take my 250 micrograms every day . i cant miss them because i have no thyroid at all but apart from the pill taking i am much better. i used to be in bed at night way before the kids even after sleeping most of the day and i always felt sore like i had the flu, i couldnt lift the weight of a bag,i also felt freezing all the time and my hair loss was terrible. these symptoms are all more or less gone.
when i still had my thyroid my levels went up and down like a fiddlers elbow but now i have no thyroid at all i am on the same dose every day of levothyroxine and ive been doing quite well. i hope you go on to feel like this too and keep feeling better hugs joanne

Hi Joanne,
That all sounds really positive and it's great to hear that. I found out after I wrote my first post that I had 3 tumors and the largest was 15cm. Like you I hadn't been able to breathe properly, raising my arms choked me as everything moved upwards, I had a real sensation of being gently strangled (lol) all the time etc etc. I am glad to be rid of it! Up to press though I seem to be struggling with my medication. Still on same dose 175mcg and have had trouble with cognition since day 9 of my TT. feel slightly drunk, memory loss, lack of being able to join things up in my head, feel like I can't see the whole picture, bit detached...... I'm sure it's the meds and me having to get used to them as it has got a little better. I'm back at work part time at the moment until I feel my brain can handle it all. here's hoping it works out great for me to, just like you. Many Thanks
