Have recently been diagnosed with graves disease, graves eye disease and a goiter as well as several small nodules on my thyroid. Im scheduled to have a total thyroidectomy on feb 22 at osu hospital in columbus ohio, and im scared, just very very scared and depressed, ive been crying a lot, and am nervous about the affects of having such an important part of me, taken out. Yes i know that the hormone will be replaced with a pill, which apparently can bring on its own set of problems as far as getting the levels right. Im just very scared, I have a two year old daughter, am a single mother in a new relationship with a wonderful man, i dont want to gain a bunch of weight from being made hypo, a little weight i can handle. What i need is to read as many positive stories as possible, seems to be the only thing that makes me feel better. My surgeon said that even though my biopsy showed no cancer, that they would only pick up on it 45% of the time, at the time of my biopsy i had a nodule, couldnt see or feel it, and withing 3 months certain dimensions of it had over doubled in size, i can answer any other ?s anyone has about my case, just want to talk to people who have been through and are going through similar situations

" Hi. I have recently been diagnosed with a multinodular goiter. It is very unconfortable and causes pressure on my throat when I talk and swallow. I am scheduled for surgery on feb 7 at yale new haven, ct. I am fairly confident in my surgeon because she removed my aunts thyroid with no problems. I am nervous about recovery because I have to two young children, 3 and 8 years old. It will be difficult for my 3 year old to understand that mommy cant pick him up. Because of my level of discomfort i am not sleeping well and living on advil and tylenol. It is hard to not think about when I can feel it all the time especially because i am exhausted. This past week has particularly difficult. I do not look forward to medicine that i will have to take the rest of my life. I do look forward to relief and to feel normal again. "

" I had hyperthyroidism (diagnosed anyway) for about 4 yrs before finally making a decision on what I wanted to do. I had a huge goiter with nodules as well but they did the biopsy on mine after the surgery never before and no cancer. But having a total thyroidectomy was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I feel great and like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders that it is all and over with. I was horrified up until the morning of the surgery because I knew I was making the right decision and fully trusted my surgeon. I have gained about 5lbs since my surgery almost a year ago but its ok because now I can actually exercise without feeling like im having a heart attack. You will know if you are making the right decision or not. Good luck! :) "
