I have been struggling with "gastritis" for 2 years now. After test after test and thousands of dollars on doctor visits, I finally got a referral to Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL. The doctors there are INCREDIBLE!!! As soon as I told them my symptoms, the doctor told me he was CERTAIN that it was gastroparesis. I told him I'd had the gastric emptying test done a year ago here in Tallahassee, FL, but he told me that the results would not be accurate because I had tested with oatmeal instead of the correct way to test...with egg and toast. Today I got the new test results and I do indeed have gastroparesis! PLEASE get yourself tested THE RIGHT WAY!!! I have a feeling that many of you who are dealing with this daily have this. If your stomach is not emptying properly, the acid will always be there eating away at your stomach. God bless you all and I pray for wisdom in your treatment!

Hi Amy, after my daugther brought home a tummy flu virus, I was later diagnosed with a bacterial infection, gastritis, IBS, and mild gastroparesis...they tried to give me this concocution that enabled the stomach to empty sooner, I hated the taste of it and you have a 1% chance of getting Parkinson's! I said no thanks..I just ate little and tried to exercise a lot. My stomach straightened itself out in one year or less. I remember how awful it was though. God Bless you. Take care of yourself.

Thanks for the encouraging note. I am trying acupuncture, exercise, and a change of diet before I try any medications. I really don't think my stomach can handle the antibiotic they want me to take and I'm afraid of Reglan. My dad has parkinson's disease and his mother had it too. I don't want anything to increase those chances. I'm glad you are healed of the nasty stomach ailments. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Amy, I am new to this group. I was thinking of trying acupuncture too, to strenghthen the LES sphincter so that my tummy can empty properly. Has acupuncture worked for you?

I'm afraid to say at this point. So far I've had 3 electro-acupuncture treatments and definitely started feeling better last week, but I've also changed my eating habits....5-6 small meals a day, low fat, low fiber, more mushy foods like soups and macaroni & cheese, so it could be the acupuncture or the change of diet or both! I did read online that the idea for a gastric pacemaker came from electro-acupuncture. It's a little expensive though....about $50 a session (each week). Some insurance companies cover it, but mine does not. I say if you have the money it's definitely worth a shot and believe it or not, is very relaxing! He also has me taking B12.

Hi Amy, is fiber bad for gastritis? I noticed you mentioned a low-fiber diet in your post. Also, what's the difference between electro-acupuncture and regular acupuncture? Thanks!

Actually, it's the gastroparesis that calls for a low-fiber diet. Not sure about gastritis. Here's what I read... "Low-fiber foods. Fiber, found mainly in raw fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, helps whisk food through the intestinal tract. But fiber has the opposite effect in the stomach, which needs extra time and effort to break down roughage. Fibrous foods are also more likely to form bezoars than softer foods are." I'm not exactly sure about the differences between acupuncture and electro-acupuncture except that with electro-acupuncture, they apply pulsating electrical currents to the acupuncture needles to better stimulate the acupuncture points (and no it does not hurt). Research has shown positive results for gastroparesis patients who have electro-acupuncture. I'm not sure about regular acupuncture. Time will tell.
