Functional Dyspepsia

So I went to my GI appointment today since the Doctors on base kept telling me that anything stomach related had to be brought up with him.

The GI dr basically saw me for maybe a total of 10 minutes? And after telling him all of my symptoms, he told me that I, infact, do NOT have Gastritis and that I have Functional Dyspepsia. Which, if you don't know what it is, in other words means upset stomach or indigestion! Really? He told me that the Aciphex I am taking can actually be making me feel sick, which I don't think is true being that I've been on the same medication for 3 years now!

He basically states that everything is stress/anxiety related, which I already know that being that my husband is deployed! So he prescribed me Elavil to help with my stress and anxiety and told me that I should try to stop taking my Aciphex.

My current dosage is 25mg one tablet before bedtime. I just took my first dose, so we will see. But I have read reviews that it has helped with stress and anxiety? I am hoping that maybe it will, in turn, help with my Gastritis?

He also questioned how I knew I had Gastritis, and I informed him that I was diagnosed in 2008 and in 2009 by Upper GI Endoscopies that were performed...

Am I crazy if I want to get a second opinion? Or has anyone tried Elavil to see if it would help with Gastritis pain?

" Doctors - oh my goodness... they are something else aren't they!

No you're not crazy - there's certainly no harm in getting a second opinion! "

" I know! He barely saw me! And tells me that I don't have Gastritis? So, the other two doctors that I saw before that performed upper GI endoscopies on me were wrong?

UGH! So frustrating! And I am never taking another anti-depressant again! I think they just act against me rather than for me. "

" Hi stefresh I can only console you. Im going therough the same thing and Im in the UK. The gastro has put me on anti-depressents which are suposed to help with the stomach by calming me down. They do nothing for it. Im in agony as it keeps flaring up nearly every day. I was once told it was functional dyspepsia but it feels badly inflamed to me. My endoscopy showed moderate gastritis and my PPI was increased. It does nothing and the pain is a lot worse. They only see you for ten minutes too and infact Ive been discharged. Im thinking of asking to be referred to another gastro in one of my nearest cities. Hugs and we plod on with it. I think it will be your gastritis. If only we could see the insides of our stomachs. A bit of acid coming up goes away with an antacid it doesn,t throb for hours. Ive had heartburn before and I know mine isn,t that. It hurts to swallow food and just keeps hurting at the top of my stomach, really bad. "

" I am so glad I found this group. I have been dealing with this for 3- 5 years now and it is so good to know I am not alone. I feel the same way in regards to my doctor visits. I feel like I am not cared about and hurried through the door. Just recently found out that I have Gastritis and I am trying to figure out how to mange the pain. I feel like I am going out of my mind with it and I am so tired of dealing with the pain. I am going to see a new GI and I hope he can offer me more help. Thanks all for pouring out your heart because it is so helpful for me and so many others I am sure of it:) "

" Yes this site keeps me going. Everyone is nice and helpful. My problem is having the willpower to stick to a gastritis friendly diet and to cope with it. Im trying but its so hard. I feel like Im going out of my mind with it too. It is so painful. "

" I called my Dr's office and asked for a referral to another GI for a second opinion. :) It's frustrating when the doctor's blow it all off to stress and my lifestyle since my husband is deployed.

I'm glad I found this site because when I'm feeling at my worst, I like to come here and remember that there are people who are going through the same things as me. :) "

" Stress does play a major role in how our bodies function. In other words, yes your GI was wrong to diagnose without the information, but do take a close look at your stress levels if you haven't already and check into seeing how you might be able to help lower it. It can be a long and frustrating process to find the answers you seek, but remember- every step brings you one step closer to finding out what is wrong and feeling better. Good luck and warmest wishes always. "
