What foods work for someone just after total gastrectomy? I'm also having trouble with taking pills. Larger pills have to be cut in half or crushed so they don't cause pain. (Anyone else have this problem?

" I have to crush my husband's pills with a mortar and pestal. Some medicines I can get in liquid form. It's definitely a problem. It makes me mad that his heartburn medicine is so excessively expensive in powder form!

Foods are very much trial and error. I puree all kinds of soups, adding my own fresh vegetables and adding protein powder. I use low-sodium chichen broth for the liquid. I also make cream soups with evaporated milk but find He now needs to take the lactase enzyme. Another pill to crush! I also puree cooked oatmeal with brown sugar, a dash of cinnamon, vallilla yogurt and a banana. "

" I have trouble taking pills whole also and my husband has found pill crushers for me at Walgreens and CVS. They work wonderful and even have a little compartment that holds a few days worth of meds. I carry my pills and pill crusher with me every where. I mix the crushed pills in with applesauce. They have the one serving travel paks and I just put my pill crusher and some applesauces in my purse and I'm good to go! I use the large jars of applesauce at home.

jmsugar- thank you so much for the food ideas... the oatmeal puree sounds yummy.

I have also discovered tofu. It is soft and can be mushed and is full of protein and it takes up flavors nicely. A little tofu and rice is nice. The rice doesn't get stuck.

I love smoothies. Some are just way to sweet and make me sick but the ones at McDonalds are very good. Sometimes I ask for the banana to be left out just to change things up! "
