Clarithromycin & Nausea

As most of you are aware, I've having a terrible time with the clarithromycin I've been taking recently. Clarithromycin is an antibiotic, related to erythromycin. I'm taking it as part of a 14-day treatment for H. Pylori bacteria that was discovered during my GBS. I was prescribed PrevPac, a 14-day combination of 3 drugs:

prevacid.com/products/prevpac-ulcer-treatment.aspx" title="http://www.prevacid.com/products/prevpac-ulcer-treatment.aspx" target="_blank">http://www.prevacid.com/products/pr...

Each dose consists of 4 pills: 1 Previcid 30 mg, 2 Amoxicillin 500 mg, and 1 Biaxin (clarithromycin) 1 Morning dose, 1 evening dose (8 total pills per day).

The real problem has been the clarithromycin which have been causing the most awful bouts of nausea I've ever experienced. Know how your saliva glands go into overdrive just before you vomit? Mine did that for 6-8 hours on 4 different occasions. Dry heaves - the works.

I'm writing this now because I've found that the trigger for the nausea seems to be solid food - even slightly solid food like yougurt. Since Thanksgiving evening, I've had nothing except my double milks and this seems to be holding the nausea at bay. I've got another 3.5 days to go in order to finish the 14 day treatment and I will not be eating anything else. Seriously, it is the absolute worst nausea I've had in my life. Going without solid food for 4 more days in order to avoid the nausea will be a walk in the park.

I don't know if my solution will work for other people but thought I should mention it because not even my doctors told me that I might be able to control the severe nausea by eliminating solid and soft foods for the duration of the treatment. In fact, they insisted that I not start the treatment until I had returned to solid food.

" Hi Jerry,
At one point in my journey I had an ulcer and can symphathize with the nausea issues. I was pretty sick for a full month. You will be on other side and able to begin to work eating solids soon enough even though it sure the #$@* does not feel like it.

oh...btw..RE: the false / positives
Dont worry if the rabbit's ok , you are ok.

" Hi Jerry!
I have been scouring the web to find someone who has experienced what I am experiencing. I had my surgery in mid July. I have gone from 280 to 209 in that short length of time.
I had an upper respiratory infection at the beginning of November. I was prescribed a one day antibotic that consisted of three pills taken all at once. Since then, I have had the most awful dri-heave, gagging moments that are so bad I have to sit for about 10 minutes to gather myself. Mine do not seem to be caused by food. It's ANY time that I lean over. If I lean in to wash my hands or pick up something from the floor, I get horribly ill. Brushing my teeth is the worst. I am praying that this will pass, but I am not seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any solutions? "

" Just took my evening dose. Only 1 day left! (Tuesday - 1 morning dose, 1 evening dose). Spoke to my dr's office today - they said because I've been having such a bad reaction, that I should wait a full 24 hours after my final dose before even trying any solid food. So maybe by Thursday morning....

The Dr's office also said that I'll have to be tested for H. Pylori again at my next checkup in January - just to be sure the treatment worked. It damn well better have because I have no intention of taking clarithromycin ever again.... "

" YEA!!!! I just swallowed my very last dose of this crap! Doc said to wait a full 24 hours after my last dose before I even try solid food. But at this point, just being able to get to the last dose is a HUGE milestone.

Maybe someday, I'll be able to eat again .... :) "

" JDavila: Yep. I've taken azithromycin (aka Zithromax / Z-Pak ) before when I had bronchitis. I'm able to tolerate that antibiotic fairly well, but I know some people don't - the nice thing about Z-Pak is that it is typically a very short course - sometimes 2 pills on day 1 , then 1 per day for 3 days.

I've been on this damn clarithromycin for 14 days and am just very glad to be done with it. Looking forward to eating again. "

" Jerry: I just feel so badly. I only took one dose of the Z pack, but ever since I've had the dri-heaves. I've lost 71 lbs since July 13th and I am happy about it but I've felt so badly lately that I've wished that I hadn't done the surgery.

Most smells make me sick to my stomach. My taste buds are totally out of wack. I can't fine anything that is appealing to me to eat. My school nurse ( I teach 6th grade) says that I am trying to go 200 miles on $2 of gas. I keep trying to fill up.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
Does it get better?

Any answers would be appreciated. My doctor just says to continue taking my vitamins and eat my protein. This is not helping at all.

HELP!!!!! :( "

" JDavila, you have several questions there but let me take what I have experience with and leave the rest to other more experienced participants here.

First, yes, changes to taste and smell are fairly common. More perception of sweetness changed radically after surgery. Pre-surgery, I literally could not make something "too sweet" - now damn near everything is already too sweet.

You've done great with the weight loss - congratulations.

It seems odd to me that you are still experiencing nausea - even if the azithromycin was the initial cause - it should have cleared your system within 10-14 days. I think it may be time to speak with the doc - there may be something else going on. The whole 'leaning over' trigger seems odd - I haven't seen anyone mention that before here. What you are describing just does not seem like the standard stuff I've seen described on this forum - but there are others more experienced than I am who may know something.

At a minimum, get to the doctor and let him/her know about these symptoms as soon as possible - definitely before the weekend. He may be able to prescribe something like promethazine or compazine. Even if not, your doc needs to be aware of the terrible nausea you are suffering - I just don't think this is normal. And most people I know tolerate azithromycin fairly well. "

" BTW, I'm trying semi-solid food again for the first time since Thanksgiving. It's been 24 hours since my last dose of clarithromycin. I just ate 1/2 of a Fage greek yogurt. I'm going to let that sit for 3-4 hours before attempting anything else. "
