I am in the process of having gastric bypass surgery and I am having second thoughts. I guess it's normal and just wanted to feel like my life will be good afterward. It has to be better than it is now. I am tired all the time and knees, feet and back hurt. I can't sleep through the night. Forgive me for complaining, I am just nervous and could use a little encouragment. I am so unsure about the healing process and how long the recovery time will be. I guess what I really want to know, is if anyone regrets having the surgery. Thanks so much for all the wonderful posts that I have been reading on this sight.

No regrets at all. Having the surgery was the BEST decision I have EVER made. I lost 175 pounds in 10 months and feel great. I no longer have sleep apnea, no more acid reflux, no more back pain or knee pain. My life has completely changed for the better.
Everyone has second thoughts because the thought of surgery is scary. But remember that God has put this opportunity in your path for a reason. Embrace the blessing. Healing is slow, but believe me the benefits outweighs the pain and struggles anyday. I was home from the hospital in 3 days. I was cleaning my house in 5 days, and went back to work in 2 weeks. I started working out in 3 weeks and 10 months later I went from 315 pounds to 140 pounds. Don't let the Devil discourage you. The devil wants us to be fat, unhappy and miserable. Don't give into those negative thoughts. You need to seize the day and know that this is a good thing. I wouldn't do a thing different. Honestly I wish I would have taken this step years earlier!!! Cheri GBS:January 2008 Starting Weight: 315 Current Weight: 140 Total weight loss: 175 in 10 months From a size 26 to a size 4!!!! Hi Isears
My friends keep asking me if I regret having the surgery and I can honestly say NO. Dont get me wrong-- it is INCREDIBLY HARD!!!! I am 9 weeks out and I did not have any complications (so far) so I was lucky but my mindset went in with I could really have some issues like I have read on this site but that is what I wanted to know before going into it. You really have to ask all your questions even the embarassing ones or gross ones and let us tell you the truth. The positive definitedly outweighs the negatives. The really only thing I misss the most is not being able to drink while I eat or even have a piece of chocolate or peanut butter and follow that with a nice glass of cold milk, ya know to quench that thirst cause you cannot drink before or after eating-- if u drink after eating some people get a very painful and UNCOMFORTABLE feeling in the bottom of their throat. I soooo miss chugging down some water or any drink for that matter. I have lost 70 lbs in 9 weeks and I am now off all my prescribed medications for high blood pressure, chloesterol and diabetes. I am still taking a 1/2 tablet of my diabetes medicine by my own choice but all my blood work came back normal and excellent. That is the best news and knowing I am going to keep losing helps even more. No more lower back pain (OMG the pain) or muscle aches.. You do have to give up a lot especially in the beginning and let me tell you its hard but you have to be prepared for it MENTALLY. I CANT STRESS THAT ENOUGH-ITS ALL MENTAL. Its a change of life for sure. Dig deep and research and ask us a million questions and nothing is too embarassing or gross-trust me. I hate change and I dont handle it well but it was time-I'm 38 yrs old and started out at 330 and now I am at 260. Be prepared to change cause once you do it-theres no going back. I am here if you want to ask me any questions-- Good luck with your decision. Tracy

So many good posts here. I just wanted to add that it really is normal to question yourself. I think we all did, to some extent. Reading posts here, asking questions, as was mentioned, too, is expected by those of us here who have had the same questions, and are happy to share what we know and have experienced.
Any surgery will take time to recover. If you've had surgeries you can draw on that time frame and if not, just know that it takes weeks to heal, though you'll likely feel better day by day. You've come to this point very likely after years of trying to lose weight other ways, on your own, in a support group, and maybe have even found some success. In the end, for me, I couldn't sustain what I did lose, and found I was all but standing still the past few years. Hang in there, and ask things as they come to you. Do your research, and then trust your well-informed choice, when the time comes. Cindy

I understand your hesitation. I was scared to death. I did a lot of praying before making my decision, but then started to have doubts about my sanity. And then, two days before my surgery I met a lady who was about two months post and she said 'it's a piece of cake'. I hung on to those words all through the next couple of days and she was right! I really never had any pain. I was terribly tired for about six weeks, but now it's been three months and my energy level is getting better all the time. I had been suffering from a lot of knee, foot, and back pain, but now it's all gone. I've lost 55 pounds and I have no regrets. I think it was a great decision and I thank God for giving me the strength.
This web site has been really helpful. You can get advice on anything so keep reading it.

I have no regrets. It is the best thing that I've done for myself. I think being nervous about the surgery is normal. I know there was stil a little doubt while they were rolling me into the operating room but I am so glad I did it!! For while it was challenging to get into the mind set of GBS but after a few months is started to become second nature and now I give it very little thought. Remember this will be a tool for you to us that will help you stay on the right path. I have had no complications at all. I agree with Cheri that healing is slow and you'll need to take it easy for a little while, but day by day you'll start melting way and your energy will go up. I am post op 11 months started at 245.8 weighed in today at 137 and lovin it!
