I have been reading from a lot of posts from the newbies here and there is a common theme. It is the same theme that continues on and on with all of us and that is why this site is so great. We get to share. The theme is being scared of the unknown, and just starting to take those first steps in learning this new lifestyle. I was reading back in my journal at the first week post op. Wow have I come a long way!!! I am 8 months post op, have lost 137 lbs, weighed in this morning at 207 lbs. This is just proof that if it can happen to me, it can happen to you.
Adjusting to life anew Wednesday, March 4, 2009 | A General Update story Well it's been a week. What a week indeed. I'm sitting here in a little discomfort because I pushed it a little too much today as far as food goes. I need to drink more. I definitley need to get more protein in. Not doing so good in that department. Learning this new stomach is challenging sometimes. I think I have gotten to the point of knowing how to control the nausea, but I gotta stop trying to push it on the soft foods. Tried cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, cup o noodle and some really mushy turkey and thickened broth. Not much in the grand scheme of things, but man my stomach has a lot of pressure on it. I didn't need as much lortab today. I woke up feeling really good, but did a little too much and am sitting here really sore this evening. I had Dan take some pictures over the weekend and not much change at all. LOL. I'm curious to see what the scale says next monday when I see the surgeon. I'm hoping to break under 300. That would just be fabulous, since I haven't been there since before I had the kids, 6 years ago now. Wow, time has flown by. So time will continue on and it is just so exciting that this is now a reality and I am living my dream. I vow to do my best each day I wake up. Planning ahead is key to not getting overwhelmed and off track. I really can't wait to go shopping for new outfits this summer, especially for sexy, girly things. Here's my challenge for those of you who are a few months or so out and have been journaling from the beginning. Go back and look in your journal and share an entry from when you were just one week out. I bet this will be great fun.... Posted on 11/07/09, 05:11 pm |

Here's a journal entry from 10 days post op:
I'm sure I'll look back on this time in a few months and just shake my head. Everything worries me, which given my anxiety problem, is about normal. I twisted wrong this week and was worried I pulled some stitches. The next morning I was fine and realized it was muscle. I lost 2 lbs every day for eight days, and thought " This is great!" Then I lost none on day nine and 1 on day 10. I need to just weigh once a week, but the darn scale calls my name every morning. Exercise. Yes, I know I need to walk more. This time of year is hard, cause it is so cold and windy one day and a little warmer the next. So I walk outside when I can, and inside when I remember. That's the hard part, remembering. They want me up and walking 8 times daily for at least 10 minutes. So I guess I'll start walking with a timer before and after each meal, and after each protein shake. I have to walk around after I take a few meds, just to make sure they go down. My husband thinks I am looking for something when I start walking around, having another senior moment of "where did I leave that". And who knows what the cats think. Good idea Callie. Teri

I have only written twice in my online journal. One, a week before my surgery, back in April. Then again in August. I have kept a scrapbook with monthly entries , but here is the first real "looking back" journal entry. While I was 4 months post op, you can see the success and accomplishments I was feeling at that point.
Cindy What a difference a few months make! Thursday, August 6, 2009 I thought it was time to add a new entry, since the only one I have written here, was from a week before i had my surgery. Much has changed in 4 months. I am SO happy , at this point, that I did have the surgery. I worried for many years if it would be safe. Kept thinking I could do this myself. Well, the weight loss surgery has been the tool I needed. I can honestly say I am working less for better results. Of course I know I'm at the early stage of losing, and it's coming off nicely, so let's hope I still am saying that in a year. I know some who have gainedsome of the weight back, but these folks are also not making sure they get all their protein in, much less other nutrients, and that is so critical to overall good health. Changes for me are most visible in my meal size. I bought some little Tapas (appetiser) plates from Target, and a few little bowls the size you'd put soy sauce in (like for dipping an eggroll). These have been very helpful . The small bowl holds 1 oz, another size I found holds 2 oz. I probably eat about 3 oz of food, (but not all protein) per meal. I have one protein shake with a little fruit added, most mornings for breakfast. I add calcium powder to that and it's not something I can taste. I walk 2 miles each morning, 6 days a week, and wear a pedometer, with the goal of break the 10,000 steps a day. Now, in the past couple weeks, I am doing that. A couple times I have made it to 12,000...when you factor in walking throughout the day too. I don't have problems with most foods. Possibel exception, eggs...didn't settle well.I have not tried steak, or beef, but did have a small amount of pulled pork one day, and was uncomfortable; so will wait and maybe try a few bites again after the 6 month time frame. My protein sources come from chicken, fish, shrimp, tuna, cottage cheese, refried beans with cheese, stick cheese, or other cheeses, which I especially enjoy with a few berries or few grapes as a snack. I have had some bites of lettuce/salads, but since they have empty calories, I tend to go more for green beans, spinach, brocolli. I have not eaten any veggies raw, other than lettuce, olives, cucumbers and spinach at this point. I was down 68# at my 3 month check. I weight once a month. I dropped 16# last month and was shocked. If I drop 12 thismonth I anticipate reaching the -80 lb.mark. That next weigh in will be August 12th, next week...yea! About now, I start to get excited. Otherwise, my goal is to just focus on what I need to do to be healthy and lose the weight.

I truly appreciate this. Being a one week post-op exactly, I need to know I'm not alone. Food scares the hell out of me right now.
And I need to at least try some thicker liquids or I'll soon be dehydrated from this diarrhea. Thanks for the info ladies.

This is callie's second great topic in two weeks. Like Kimmy said, it's just nice to know we're not alone here.
Thanks Callie!

Callie,
you have such a sweet demeanor and you write so well. You really should think about writing a book. Imagine all the stories you could tell (imagine the ones from here) and your encouragement to others is second to none. Thanks girlfriend!!!

At least start your own message board. The ads on this one make it sluggish.
