" I was considered pre-diabetic, but was actually getting insulin in the hospital pre-op and one day post op. My A1-c was a little elevated. Has been perfect since surgery and no problems at all with my blood sugar or A1-C levels since surgery. I also had high BP and was on meds for 14 years prior to surgery and now my BP runs about 102/68!! So I consider it a complete success in that realm. I have had complications such as an ulcer and dehydration and some malnutrition issues however. "

" I was a severe diabetic before surgery. I was taking 4 insulin shots a day and a pill and my sugar levels still ran about 225 to 250 all the time. My A1C was 15.9 when i found out i was diabetic about a year ago and 10.9 before surgery. I am four months post op and have not had any diabetic medicine since surgery. My levels run 80 to 130 all the time. Not sure what A1C is cause doc is running blood tests next week but I can confidently say that if I would not have had this surgery my diabeties would have killed me within a few years.

good luck! "

" Hi Riccardo;

I cannot comment on the diabetic issues, but can tell you a few things that I was glad I knew before surgery...

You must be willing to make a life change. It's not always easy getting in the protein and finding your own practices can be challenging.
There are things that you do/have now that you will never be able to again - at least will not be supposed to - soft drinks, high fat, high sugar foods, caffeine.
I am only a month out right now and nothing tastes good...I never really want to eat and have to force myself. From what I understand this does change. Finding a protein drink has been extremely difficult and I have given up on that right now. Everything tastes uber sweet!!

Do I have regrets, nope! Do I wish it was as easy as the surgeon's office made it sound, you bet!

Good luck - I know you are at the right place, the folks here are so supportive and are full of information when you need it!

...Chris "

" My surgeon mentioned that Gastic Bypass Surgery would be used in the future to "cure" diabetes. Guess the future isn't so future. I can't help with the side effects of the surgery, since I haven't had it yet.. but good luck : ) "

" So far all my side effects have been good ones!
Lower Blood Sugar, no more meds.

Keeping a close watch on my Blood Pressure, cuz the numbers aren't as high as they were, so may be able to get off that.

Able to walk further and longer than ever before!

During the week I'm staying with my daughter & g'daughter; we moved to an upstairs apt and there is no way in Hades I could've climbed these stairs at the pace I am now b4 surgery!

Ummmmm, lets see, looking better, feeling better

So far, for me, it's been alllllll good. I do know there are some people here on the board who have had some major issues after surgery, so they may want to voice their thoughts and opinions.

Hugs,
Peggy "

" FYI -- I Havent had my GBP yet, although I found this to be most fasinating at my Drs. office they said : that thru reseach they have found that the bottom of the stomach pouch (think of a football, take one of the sides) has proven to be the biggest problem of diabeties, when the stomach is removed from the digestive track, the persons who have had diabetes, almost within 2-3 days no longer have diabetes symptoms at all. -- Other than that I heard that the side effects are tremendous if you want to be a healthier, smaller more energetic person!!! " 5 days after my surgery, I was off all insulin and diabetic meds. However, I do know a family who most had the surgery and all still are on insulin..so while a very high percentage are "cured"...there are some that are not. "
