Gastric Bypass Cold and Flu Survival

What Can Be Taken

. Tylenol 650-1000mg every 4-6 hours as needed- body aches/fever

. Sudafed 30mg- 1 tablet every 4-6 hours as needed- decongestant

. Sudafed PE Quick Dissolve Strips- 1 tablet every 4-6 hours as needed-

decongestant

. Tylenol Cold Multi-Symptoms E-Z Tabs

o Available regular and extra strength

o Day and night formulations; combo pack available

. Any sugar-free cough medicine, such as Robitussin

. Any sugar free cough drops or lozenges

. Cepacol spray or lozenges for sore throat

. Mucinex Mini-Melts for chest congestion

. Imodium as needed for diarrhea

When Are Anti-Biotics Indicated and What Can Be Used

Antibiotics are usually indicated when symptoms are accompanied by a fever of 101 or greater. The

majority (98% according to the literature) of all sinus infections are viral, even with yellow-green

drainage.

Some antibiotic recommendations, if use of an antibiotic is indicated are:

. Non-extended release medications

o Amoxil (chewable tabs and liquid available)

o Omnicef (liquid available)

o Augmentin (liquid and chewable tabs available)

o Biaxin (liquid available)

. Extended release meds may be used, but may not be fully absorbed. Monitor your symptoms for

improvement. Such medications may include:

o Z-Packs (liquid available)

o Levaquin (liquid available)

o Avelox

Nutrition Tips During Illness

. Avoid dairy products with post nasal drip, as they may thicken secretions

. Maintain hydration, especially with clear liquids

. Sip on peppermint, ginger, chamomile teas

. Maintain protein

. Maintain diet as tolerated

Turns out the virus was short-lived and I was able to knock the symptoms down with some liquid children's cold medicine for the couple of days it stuck around. "
