Hello all,
I'm new to the gastric surgery process, I don't even have my surgery date yet. But I'm curious what you tell your boss when you have to take off work for several weeks for the procedure? Then what do you tell "nosy" workers about your dramatic weight loss. Other then none of their business?! Posted on 07/05/12, 07:35 pm |

I was honest about everything... But I'm pretty close to my management team.

Everyone at my work knows and they are being very supportive of me. And actually one of my managers is going to have RNY surg. in October. Maybe you should tell some of them. You might be surprised. :)

Legally your boss cannot disclose anything health related to anyone but HR. If you are uncomfortable with your coworkers knowing your business, then just don't tell them. If they ask about your weightloss, just say thanks for noticing or something like that. I work in health care and am having my surgery at one of the facilities I work at, so I pretty much told everyone since they will see me there the day of surgery anyway.

I am in the same place as you... Im not sure how to tell people I have committed to WLS and if I even want to. I have told some of my closest friends and everyone has been very supportive so far! I guess its just a fear of the negative responses.
I do know that the support is awesome to have though !!!

I have told no one but those living in my house. I waited till I had time off from work and had the surgery then. I told folks that I was going to spend the summer really trying to get in shape, etc. Also, I'm not losing at the same rate as many others are (bummed about that!). I've only lost about 30 pounds so I don't have as much to "explain".

I am pre op as well. I only told my immediate boss because I knew I would need to ask for time off for all of my appointments, and one other lady who I have worked with for like 15 years.
My problem is not going to be my cooworkers. I work at a retirement community with about 350 residents many of whom have known me for 16 years. Sometimes seniors have no filter they say whatever comes to mind whether it is kind or not. I am sure I will get some interesting comments when I start to lose weight.

I told my boss and his boss because they needed to know why I would be out. They were both very supportive. I told a few good freinds at work because I knew they would support me. I didn't tell other people until I went back to work. My surgery was on a Wednesday; I was out Wesnesday, Thursday, and Friday. The following week I worked from home Monday - Thursday then went in on Friday. I don't offer this information to people at work, but if they ask - or tell me how much better I look now - I'll tell them. I'm proud of what I did. If anyone doesn't like it it's their problem, not mine. I don't have one single regret.

Basically all you have to tell your employer is that you are having some surgery done and you will be out for this length of time, If you boss asks for more details then you just tell them its a personal issue but i can get a doctors note if need be.
No one has to know if youdont want them to know if they comment about your wl then tell them thank you, if they ask how you are doing it then just tell them watching what i am eating if you don't want them to know as tht isn't a lie you are watching what you eat. Hope this helps its your own personal decision.

I have told everyone. I am scheduled for bypass on 7/23. I know everyone will know anyway....there is no way possible I could lose the amount of weight that WLS will give me. Maybe if I was on Biggest Loser but even then I don't think I can lose it as quickly.
My problem is I am a Culinary Arts Instructor at a high school. As I am returning to work 3 1/2 weeks post-op and may have difficulty eatting in front of them. They will also see my weight loss.....I don't know if I will tell them right away or wait until they ask? I guess I will play it my ear.....
