Hey everyone, I was told by my dr that I should be jogging/running by now. Im 4 and a half months out and I weigh 274lbs and my mind is telling me Im too big still to be running!!!! When I watch weight loss shows like biggest loser I see people that weigh more than me running and they seem to be able to handle it. Im guessing its a mind thing thats stopping me from running and also an embarrssement thing cause I really dont see myself running at the gym on the treadmill in front of all of those people, Im also scared of falling off lol. I know running would burn alot of calories and help tone up my legs so I really should try. How many of you are running or ran at my weight???

I've been jogging for a while. I am actually running my first 5k in March. I currently weigh 213 and my weight has not stopped me. If Im not mistaken I started jogging when I was 260.
Do not define yourself by a number on the scale. It doesn't matter what anyone thinks b/c at the end of the day this journey is about you. The only recommendation I have is to start gradual. It is not a race. If it means doing 5 minutes and the next day adding another minute it's a start. Oh and invest in a pair of good running shoes. New Balance or Nike Shox make awesome running shoes. Good luck and best wishes! Josie

I am in the middle of the Couch to 5k running/jogging program and I love it.
http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2... If that's too much for you try jogging 4mph for 30 seconds at a time. Just try it a few times in your half hour walk. Gradually add more time each week. I think it's your head that's holding you back. You're body will be able to do it!

i started at about your weight and I have lot 41 lbs so am now 229...when i first started I would walk on the treadmill at 3.2 and then every song change or so I would try to run/job for one minut.......now I am trying to jog more becasue my goal each day is to get 10,000 steps, which I monitor on a body bugg... I go on my break, lunch and second break and try to get as MANY steps as possible done before I leave work-- we have a gym here........I hate my job so I figure I might as well get my workout (which I don't really enjoy) out of the way and go home to hang with my son, friends, or just to relax.........)....but even at my weight I can't run that much... I run about 1/8th of a mile and then walk at 3.5 and then I run and walk... each time I try to go a bit further with running........I, too, am trying to run a race at the end of march.. it would be nice to be able to at least job one half of the 5k..
just keep moving.. when it is time for you to run, you will do it...

Many things affect when and if you can run, without injury. Generally, if your doctor is giving you the encouragement to push yourself a bit, maybe it's safe to say go for it, and do what you can do. There are some great sites, (like the Couch to 5K), and others, to look into and I love Patricia's idea of walking then adding some running in for maybe 30 seconds or so, and building up as you are able.
Having said that, I hadn't run since elementary school, and honestly wondered if I could. I started walking daily, and have added little bits of running/jogging in and do find I have built up, but for me it's been slower than some . What's important is to do a little more tomorrow than you did today, in whatever fitness route you take. If you can't run , walk, and maybe walk a little faster tomorrow. Adding in spurts of jogging/running is all good, and you'll know if you can push yourself a little more.

At 4 months out you are still healing.. I would be careful with the "running".. also injuries can keep you from being able to get around and get other basic exercise. I have read a lot of posts on here from people that got hurt "doing too much too soon".. and regretted it!! Good Luck!!

I would recommend using an elliptical. You move at a jogging pace, but it is way easier on your knees.
