I'm actually seeing people on this site wishing others "Good Luck".
I tried "luck". It never worked out so well for me. I'm gonna stick to a different strategy to get the things I want in life. ...... hard work, honesty, perseverance, dedication, ........ the "odds" seem to be better with my "system". Good Luck?......yeah, right.......to think, I once actually believed in it. Posted on 01/18/09, 06:01 pm |

Thanks Eastwester ..Good Topic.
''Luck.'' Well for me and 'my mind while gambling was :''iffen it weren't for bad luck "I would have no luck at all.'Saddly "I actually waited for a series of 3 '' to feel there was ''Luck a coming'. I went gambling on more 'allusions of ''My LUCKY DAY''. MY husbands used to say to me.. Yah yah yah , every day is lucky for YOU>> I failed to realize how often "I used that to 'go '"I wanted him to 'believe 'I could 'be Lucky '''Please ''please ''give me some money''.Heck "I even believed that lie'. It took me awhile to rid myself of using that 'saying in 'recovery ; but I did .. Blessings Abound.. Amen. sanr.

I know you may be referring to me in saying you saw 'good luck' on the site. Honestly, I didn't think much about that word being inappropriate, but it probably is. I understand what you're saying - I guess I was just trying to give the person positive support and encouragement and didn't use the write word . . .trying to say I wish them the best in their recovery, which of course DOES include hard work, honesty, dedication, etc, not "luck" in they way it was interpreted.

Actually, I saw the phrase used in four or five different places. I wasn't referring to any specific person.....that's why I used the word "people". I also didn't use the words "wrong", "innapropriate"....nor did I assume that I could somehow know what the other people meant to be saying.
What I did was to speak of my own recovery, what didn't work for me and what did work, and of how my addiction controlled thinking process was in error when I was still in action. I'm sorry if anyone chooses to be offended by the story of my recovery.

Does luck only apply to gambling?
I don't think so! I have noticed that how ironic this phrase is, however this is a common phrase to wish someone the best. To be honest qw all still need a little luck to get over this addiction, to me...on the recovery road to be able to meet someone who is supportive, knowledgable, sweet, kind and helpful, that comes out from a little luck. isn't it?

Mike, how could anyone be offended by the story of your recovery? No way, no how.
I am so grateful for your recovery... I would never have found such great friends on this particular site if it had not been for your recovery. People at the office use the phrase 'good luck with that' all of the time. I cringe when I hear it. Not because they are bad people, but because I know that "luck" is a word having no substance. Your recovery story as well as everyone elses here has everything to do with a choice... not a chance. Wikipeida defines Luck as "a chance happening, or that which happens beyond a person's control." I think people use it without realizing what it is they are really saying (it's kind of like saying "God bless you," when a person sneezes). I say there is no such thing as luck, anymore than there is no such thing as coincidence... I am more of the divine appointment mind-set. I believe that it was by divine appointment that I discovered this site so I could meet all of the wonderful people here and receive encouragement to lift my head out of the sand so I can continue my journey as a whole person in this life for me and Jordan. I appreciate you and every bit of your straight forwardness. There were several points said directly to me by you that caused me to wake up, take my head out of the sand, and stand up. Blessings to you my friend.

Mike is the most knowledgable person in this site. You can almost ask him anything related to gambling addcition. Even though he has gambling FREE for so many years he still come to this site everyday to support us. A little tough may be but he is sincere.

Avoidance of the word 'luck' is part of linguistic/behavioural re-training and works for a short time as a reminder of what we need to avoid in our thinking and behaviour.
Like any linguistic/behavioural habit the need to avoid the word fades with time and healing - it ceases to function as a trigger. If it works to avoid the word for now, then that can only be a positive thing for you.
