I know I need help to quit gambling, but I have read information on GA and I am concerned that I do not believe in a "god" or higher power, and that seems to be a big deal in the program. My other problem is that while I am well aware that I have a problem, nobody else has any idea and I really am not comfortable telling family and friends about this issue. Is GA an option if I have these two issues?

Try looking at it this way.....
Like you said, you know that you need help to stop. This tells us that you realize that you cannot stop on your own, you need some help. (from someone, something, or someplace). For now, we'll refer to this "someone" as "a Power Greater than Yourself". This "power" may be me, this group, the fellowship of GA, God...... whatever you choose it to be......just the idea that you're reaching out for a hand is enough of a starting point, you do not immediately need to convert to a certain set of spiritual beliefs in order to benefit from the program of GA. Just show up, keep an open mind, and listen. That's enough of the "God" stuff for now. As for who else you choose to tell about any facet of your recovery or your problem, that's your business. You need only reveal what you are comfortable in revealing....... that's the meaning of the "Anonymous" part of the name. But, I'll make a guess, if you don't mind........ If you have decided that you may be a compulsive gambler or that you have a gambling problem......then your close friends and family probably already know, or at least suspect, the same thing. ..........and you're also probably gonna be pleasantly surprised by the goodwill and support those friends and family are going to hold out to you as you deal with this set of issues. So, the answer is YES, GA is not only an option, it is probably the BEST option. There, you'll meet a group of people just like yourself, problem gamblers looking for a solution and sharing what they have learned that works for them....... it'll probably work for you, too.

Yes, GA is an option to anyone with the desire to stop gambling. You really don't have to tell your family & friends, if you don't want to. You can go to a meeting, just to check it out. I've been to some GA meetings and learned a lot about my addiction. The higher power thing bothers a lot of members at first. Especially since there are so many, many different religions out there. To me a higher power means believing in something greater than myself. I've even heard people at the meetings say, your higher power can be the calendar on the wall. The thing is, I've discovered, one of the best things an addict can do is to stay in touch with others like themselves. I can't pretend I know how this works, I suppose it's because we've all been through the same thing. Keep reading, there's lots to learn, and you can learn lots here. Ask as many questions as you can think of, we'll give them all our best shot. You are not alone. Start by stopping. I know it's easier said than done, but it is the beginning.
