removal of gallbladder.

In October of 2007 I went to the ER with severe pain in my upper abdomen. Never had I experienced anything like it in my life. I thought I was having a heart attack. They diagnosed it as heartburn and sent me home. A couple months later I had another major attack....I didn't go to the ER but had a day of intense pain, vomiting and then the next couple of weeks suffered queasiness, amber colored urine and intense itching. My doctor tested my enzymes and said my liver levels were way off...he assumed it was a viral thing. I had some other pain following that and insisted that something just wasn't right. He did an ultrasound on my GB and low and behold it was discovered that it was half full of small gallstones and mostly "sludge". My doctor prescribed losing a few more pounds and increasing the exercise. I did lose 10 more pounds, increased my running/walking and have really felt better. So I thought that perhaps this was the answer. I have continued to suffer small, mild attacks...pretty infrequently...but this past weekend I had a major attack. So, now I just want this thing removed! My question for anyone out there who has had theirs removed.....does it require an overnight stay in the hospital? How soon is one up and moving around following this type of surgery? I know it is a relatively simple surgery....but any advice would help me...at least put me at ease a little more. Thanks!

" Hi, I had my G.B. removed 3 wks. ago and I am glad I did. I went into hospital at 6.30 a.m. and went into theatre at about 9a.m. I was sitting up reading the papers by lunch time but because I had a drain in I had to stay in overnight but went home 10.30a.m. the following morning but I have heard of people who do go home the same day. All I can say is dont worry, its easy and I was terrified about it but really it is nothing to worry about. Hope this helps you feel at ease and good luck. "

" Thanks for the advice! The way I look at it anything will be better than the unexpected attack....all that pain and suffering......afraid of being out and about somewhere and having an attack. Can really dampen one's mood....hahahaha. "

" I had my gallbladder removed 5 weeks ago. I was in hospital for 2 days. I did have keyhole surgery but my gallbladder was completely twisted and also swollen and it took the surgeon quite a while to remove it. That said, I would rather have had the operation with no anaesthetic than one of those gallstone attacks. They are absolute agony and do feel like your having a heart attack. You will only feel poorly for say 2 weeks and then you'll be well and free of pain. Otherwise your attacks will keep happening and will get more frequent. The operation is really nothing to worry about and the scars are minimal. I have tiny scars. Any operation is not nice, but definitely have it done. "

" i was told it is routinely a same day surgurgical procedure in the hospital where i had mine done. Course me being me mine was anything but routine and because of that my healing process took a lot longer. That being said my scars are completely gone and i can eat anything i want and most blessed of all i am free of that maddening gall bladder attack pain. "

" I had mine out when I went in for a diverticulitis attack. My diverticulitis surgery was scheduled for 10/10/08 but on 9/28/08 I thought I was dying/having a heart attack/labor (at 61 :)) etc. I was admitted on the assumption it was my diverticulitis and asked my Surgeon if he coud remove my gallbladder because I had had so many problems but all the tests were negative. Lo and behold I had the surgery on 10/01/08 and were they ever surprised when my gallbladder was swollen and precancerous. Thank God I have a wonderful surgeon. Recovery was fine. My husband had his out in day surgery and went to work in 2 weeks. "
