Acid Reflux and Asthma

Can my acid reflux be the cause of my development of asthma. I have been an athlete for the last 18 years and never suffered from asthma like i do now. I was diagnosed with acid reflux about nine months ago and probably two months later I had my first asthma issue. It has been worse the past two or days. I guess I was just wondering if anyone else has this connection or if I am just developing something else.

Acid reflux can definitely make asthma worse. I have COPD, and I know that if my reflux is bad it will definitely affect my breathing. Make sure you are following the diet and raising the head of your bed at night. That will help a lot. Good luck. Hugs, Sue

what do they use to treat the irritated airways...pred? my GERD has been messing with my asthma and I've been focusing on getting the GERD under control but I've been neglecting the asthma part. I take my daily stuff, but that's it. my sore throat is finally getting less, so I must be doing something right.

My GERD is normally under control I just get the odd week where I seem to be full of Acid and then that will really irrate my throat and breathing. I don't really take care of my Asthma the way I should either, I've got a steroidal preventer inhaler I am suppose to use but I never take it and just use the reliever when needed. I've been told to book an appointment with the Nurse aswell for Asthma but never do, I hate visiting the GP surgery to be honest.

I have the same problem. GERD with reflux especially if there is a hiatal hernia present will sometimes cause acid to be aspirated into the lungs. This causes brochial spasms which cause asthma type symptoms. I used to wake up in the night gasping for air. I initially was diagnosed with asthma and put on various asthma drugs which made the condition worse by relaxing the LES even more. My pulmonologist finally asked me if I had heartburn which I do and referred me to a GI doc. He found hiatal hernia, gastritis, GERD and esophagitis. All this was mimicking asthma! I was put on a PPI and the asthma type symptoms went away. After a few months I tried to stop the PPI but the symptoms returned. I tried every conceivable natural "cure" available. Even went to a ND. Nothing worked. So in my opinion if one has a hiatal hernia which causes the LES to malfunction a Rx is the only way to treat this condition as natural cures only work for GERD in the abscence of a hiatal hernia. Hope you find a solution for your condition. Best wishes.
