I guess I need a little encouragement. I started omeprazole a 7 days ago today. The first few days I started to feel somewhat better. But Monday afternoon the reflux has come back. Now anything I eat gives me the burning and burping.
This thing scares the crap out of me that it is destroying my throat. I know I've been on the meds only a week. So am I just being inpatient? Posted on 07/01/09, 03:07 pm |

Your body might just be trying to adjust---are these sx worse than what you started with?? You might call your doc's office and even speak with the nurse and ask her advise......theyre usually easier to reach/talk to than the doc, especially with holiday coming up.
Is this the first drug you have used? Ive been on protonix for 2+ yrs and have been having a flare of symtoms lately (stress??) and upped the dose to 2 a day (doc said to and see if it worked.) Its taken a week to finally get some relief--thought I had strep throat or something....its still a bit sore, but better....FINALLY ON THE MEND? I guess, if it were me, I'd give it 10days to 2wks to see if drug worked as long as side effects were not toooo bad. Hope you feel better--takes some time to heal what has been burned (thats what I keep reminding myself....sigh). Maybe some Mylanta or Maalox for now to help? Honey helps me too--in tea or just a small teaspoon full on its own coats things. there's always Pepto.... Good luck and let us know how you do.... gentle hugs good1

Thanks. My general practice doctor put me on Zantac when this originally start in June. That helped my stomach but not the chest and burping. My GI put me on omeprazole.
The difference in my symptoms came when I switched from the Walmart prescription (not over the counter) and my other pharmacy's prescription. So not sure if it is a drug issue or maybe just I did something that day to bother it. I really have to choice but to try and be patient with the meds for at least another week. I am back on the Walmart prescription, figured it couldn't hurt to try. I do have Gaviscon on hand when I need it. I'm just inpatient, anxious, stressed and I'm sure that doesn't help it either.

I called the doctor's office and they said they normally don't make a follow up appt for a month. So she said to give the meds longer and then in a few weeks let them know if it is not getting better.
So I guess on I go. I am hoping having a few days off soon, destresses me somewhat. What other things do you suggest to eat? So far all I have been eating for four days are bread, rice, chicken, potatoes.

Apples! Get some apples, They always go down well. And applesauce, too. You really need to try to balance your diet a little better, to the extent that you can. You might be able to handle green beans, broccoli, cabbage, mushrooms, celery, carrots, and things like that. Some plain fish is good, too, it you like it.
Give the 2 omeprazole a day a try for a month, and then if that doesn't do the trick, your doctor can raise the dosage or try a different med. I take 80 mg of omeprazole daily, 40 in the morning and 40 about half an hour before supper. Good luck!
