Gerd Triggers

I have the "normal" symptoms - heartburn, throat burning and fullness, some nausea. I take Omeprazole at bedtime and it usually keeps everything under control. I seems that some foods will trigger the gerd but I can eat the same thing a couple of days later and everything is fine. Anybody else have the same kind of triggers? sometimes it hits and then other times it doesn't? 2 things that come to mind is pizza and chocolate. There are others also -- caffeine and too much sugar.

Also, seems like fatigue will be a problem when I am "attacked". Have other medical issues and medicine that cause fatigue also. Not fun ! Sometimes just feel drained but keep going ...

Thanks for any thoughts

" The big triggers for most people are tomatoes, onions, caffeine, carbonated beverages, citrus fruits and juices, mint, chocolate, fried and fatty foods. Everybody seems to have their own individual triggers, too. Mine is bananas. I've been burping them since I was a baby, and still get ferocious heartburn from them.

Some pizza places will actually make pizza for you without red sauce. I order mine with just cheese, and veggies like greep peppers, mushrooms or spinach. It's great!

I'm curious why you take your Omeprazole at bedtime. My doctor instructed me to always take it about 30-60 minutes before supper, and then again first thing in the morning before breakfast. You need to be taking is before meals to get the full benefit of it.

Hope this helps!
Hugs, Sue "

" Sue, I used to take the Omeprazole before a meal. It worked OK. My neighbor said she takes before bedtime so I tried it and it seemed to really help much more. I guess whatever works best. Just like the triggers, it is different for everyone. Thanks for your post. "

" Hi Toma32

This is exactly the case for me. It is not just one food. I thought it was chocolate as that has caused me problems before. But then the next day I will eat chocolate and I will be fine. There is only one thing I have found so far that always causes it, potato salad! Everyone says to identify what it is that causes it, but how can we do that when it changes all the time! "

" Oh and meant to say that I suffer from fatigue as well. All I want to do when it is really bad is sleep. Though I did have Mono 3 years ago so it might be the effect of that! "
