Hi. I am new to this group. I have suffered from acid reflux for years and recently was place on 2 nexium pills a day. Unfortunately my acid reflux is getting worse. Is there a better medication to take. Should I avoid, dairy, wheat, acidy foods??? I have other illnesses, however I do not think they are related. Last year I was checked for Barretts Esoph. But I did not have it. Can it appear suddenly after a year?????It feels like somnething is constantly stuck in my throat........Help.... Jude

Yes, it can appear any time...as long as the cause is on going.
Nexium is for healing mostly. I have really bad GERD and I control my acid by having smallish meals. Low oil is so important. If you eat something oily take a multi-enzyme immediately after the offending meal. Sleep on your left side and know the usual offenders like spicy hot foods, acidic fruits and drinks, chocolate is real acidic :(, and there may be some things that affect just you. (I cannot eat lettuce, cilantro or fresh basil. Not even a sliver.) I found that out by keeping a food diary. There is an osteoporosis medication that causes severe GERD. I have almost drowned in my own stomach acid twice...it is that bad. My emergency cocktail is several Tums, another Prilosec, a drink of mint Mylanta and Gaviscon that creates a foamy barrier. Then I sit up for an hour. Once in a while, depending on what I ate, I may have to throw it up. btw the Mylanta will clean your clock the next day. lol Man I can babble...

Hi Mazel,
First, always remain calm. What ever happens with GERD usually takes time to develop. You see new symptoms, but they have taken time. Barretts is a precusor. Just because you have it does not mean you will always have it. You will feel better if you change your eating habits as described by daily food. Find what aorks for you, experiment. If you are obese (I was) you must lose weight to the level that you don't get GERD. I have lost 30 pounds. I was there (no GERD) for a month but then I put on ten pounds. That month of no GERD was great. Try cantalope if you are getting sores in your throat and mouth. Cantalope is 'base' and can help soothe them. Now, at 62 I am dieting and exercising. I feel like a new man and I still have a ways to go. So, set a goal that you can reach and go for it. The other thing I do is I use a pillow that helps me sit nearly upright in bed, (footjoy.com)it helps but it is not the total answer. Yes, your life has changed. Best of luck.
