Chronic Nausea

I am a 21 yr old female suffering from chronic nausea for 3 years now. The first 2 years, it only occurred a few times a month and so I wrote it off as stress. Then in June 2008, I began to feel nauseous constantly. I’ve never thrown up, I’m just nauseous with loss of appetite and weight secondary to the nausea (I’m 5’7’’ and I dropped down to 107 that June, when I typically weight 125). I had blood work done and an abdominal ultrasound, both of which were normal, and I tested negative for the H. Pylori bacteria. I was then given Remeron (an antidepressant and 5HT-3 antagonist) to increase my weight. The Remeron helped for a few weeks, but the nausea returned. I then started Prilosec 20mg/day. 6 months later, I’m up to 134 lbs and have zero nausea when I take both Prilosec and Remeron. But as soon as I go off one of them, the nausea returns. It’s worse in the morning and when I eat fatty foods. I’m having an upper GI in about a month to check for ulcers and “rule out something serious like cancer” according to my doctor, but I’m going crazy in the meantime wondering what’s wrong. Do anyone have any idea what this could be? Have you ever heard of a 21 yr old getting stomach cancer? I have none of the risk factors and no family history of stomach cancer. A friend of mine was nauseous all the time too and found out she has gastroparesis, but when I mentioned this to my doctor he said it was impossible because I never throw up, but my friend never threw up either. I’m so exhausted trying to figure out what’s wrong with my body. Any insight would be much appreciated.

" Wow when I read this it was like reading my own story! I just turned 22 and I have been dealing with constant nausea as well. I have never thrown up either but I get to the point where I am over the toilet trying to throw up because it's just that bad. Morning nausea, and sometimes after meals, and I have to stay away from fatty foods too. I was on Prilosec for a bit and it did help somewhat but not entirely. I would take reglan for the nausea, and now I take compazine for it which works. I was tested for gastroporesis but it was negative, and had an endoscopy which showed large amounts of bile in my stomach. Dr. didn't know why it was there, but thought it might be causing the nausea or may not. I've been told for years though that the nausea is stomach acid. Your stomach is empty in the morning so it's worse then when stomach acid is just sitting there. And fatty foods can sometimes make you feel sick because they sit in your stomach longer, and even having slight gastroporesis can make it worse. So if Prilosec works for you then it's probably just stomach acid. I wouldn't worry about stomach cancer, unless it runs in the family because it is very very rare. See what the upper GI shows, and depending on that maybe they will do an endoscopy on you which can show a lot. Good Luck! "

" Thanks for your reply, it made me feel a lot better. As far as the endoscopy goes, was it really unpleasant? I can't even swallow pills without having food with them to trick my mind into thinking i'm just eating, so I can't imagine having to swallow a scope. Are you conscious during the procedure? I hear they give you something like valium to relax you. Did you have an upper GI or just the scope?
Thanks again =) "

" I can't swallow large pills so I was really nervous for it, but most dr.'s do it under sedation through an IV so are out for it which is great. I did have an upper GI too, and that is a piece of cake except for the awful tasting barium you must drink. But really they both are nothing to worry about! Good Luck! Message me and let me know how things turn out for you. "

" You can have gallbladder problems without showing on the ultrasounds, I did! They did a HIda scan also easy procedure. It will show how much bile is getting through. Especially the high fats will make you sick. Gallbladder surgery is the second most performed operations in the nation. SO much more easy than 40 years ago. Ask for a hida scan from your drs...... "

" My doctor suspected gallbladder problems at first, but he said my gallbladder was okay because my blood tests and ultrasound were both normal. I've never heard of the "hlda scan". I'll look into it, esp if the other tests turn out normal. Thanks for the suggestion. "

" Hopefully the upper GI will be enough, I'm trying to avoid the scope if at all possible. But it's good to know it wasn't too uncomfortable. I"ll let you know how it goes. "

" I also had a endoscopy done before the gallbladder was officially diagnosised they put me under alitle just like a colonoscopy I didnt know a thing they took a couple of biopsies and also a small benign polyp out of my stomach. Everything looked good, which pointed more to the gallbladder again. "

" Yes gallbladder can also be a possibility. I had both an ultrasound and hida scan like you mentioned, but mine came back normal. Check that out too! "

" Hey everyone, thanks for your input. Unfortunately, after 5 months of doing really well, my nausea is back. I don't know why it's hit again seeing as I haven't gone off any of my meds. This is so frustrating. I just ordered some acupressure anti-nausea wrist bands. Has anyone had any luck with these? "

" Listen I had the same problem constant nausea and my ultra sound showed no gall bladder problems but as soon as my hida scan came back it showed my gallbladder not functioning very well and on top of that I had drug induced gastroparesis so I took reglan for ahwile and I have not had problems since. Also I lost 30lbs and I was already skinny to beguin with. I did not vomit at all I just had that Loss of appetite and contant nauseated feeling uh it was awful. I had a doctor call me anorexic, basket case it is not in your head make your specialist run those test cause mine felt bad after they came back positive... BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE> "
