Carafate

My doc gave me an rx to try carafate; I have acid reflux, but not an ulcer. If anything, the carafate gave me a little stomach ache--I took it for 2 days and didn't seem to help my acid reflux at all. Also, on those 2 days I ate rather poorly.

Has anyone had positive or negative experiences with carafate? It is quite expensive for a small bottle...my insurance covers only a small portion of the cost.

" I've tried it for bile in my stomach. Didn't notice it helped, and I too had a bit of a stomach ache while taking it. So I stopped it. Plus when reading about the medicine in the brochure it says it only helps if you have an ulcer, because it coats ulcers to protect your stomach. I'm not all that sure how or why it would help heartburn either. "

" Thanks Missay. My doc gave it to me because I asked for it. I read on askapatient.com that many had been helped by it for acid reflux. Then I read in the PDR that it only helps reduce gastric pepsin by 37%. No big whoop, for what it costs. I have GERD and can't take the ppi's--they give me the "trots" really badly, so I'm stuck using Pepcid, which is working somewhat. Doesn't get rid of the heartburn completely, but takes the edge off. " I had sores in my mouth and presumably down the esophagus. The carafate would help heal those. I thought that was great. My pharmacist warned to take it about an hour after other medicines and at least 3 hours before eating anything. It stops digestion for that period of time. Good luck. "
