I am on nexium 40mg for heartburn but it doesnt seem to be working I have been back to the doctors but he just says I have a nervous digestive system. I had a gastroscopy 12 months ago and it was fine. I have been back to my gp 3 times this week as I cannot eat much, I have chest pains, I feel like I have a permanent lump in my throat, I am a bit wheezy as well. I am also taking Famotidine and Motilium. I have tried slippery elm, licorice tea and lactobac and nothing seems to work. I am so tired as well. I am a coeliac but am on a strict diet so I donnot think it is associated to that. Does anyone have any advice, as it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Karen

" Hi Karen, Welcome to the group! Is is safe to assume that you are taking the Nexium 30-60 minutes before breakfast? That way is will have the best chance of helping you.

I also found it essential to raise the head of my bed 4-6". You can use blocks or bricks under the legs of your bed at the head. Don't just just pillows, your entire torso needs to be raised. Or you could use a wedge pillow. It will really help, I'm sure.

It sounds to me like you have LPR, in addition to GERD (Laryngopharyngeal reflux). All that term really means is that the acid goes all the way up to your larynx. I have it too, and I get terrible pain in my larynx and it definitely makes my breathing worse. Since I also have Emphysema, I have to be extra vigilant about my diet and sleeping raised up.

I know you are following the ciliac diet, but make sure you are also eliminating the gerd triggers from your diet, such as tomatoes, onions, caffeine, chocolate, mint, spicy, fried or fatty foods.

Can you do anything to relieve stress? I know you have a CF two year old, and that must be pretty stressful all by itself. But if you could get some exercise, or try meditation or relaxation cds, or whatever works, that will help, too.

I sure hope you can find a solution! I hope some of this helps.
Hugs, Sue "

" Thanks for the advice, I have been telling my GI about my wheezing and my larynx is sore but he just seems to fob me off. He has never even mentioned GERD to me. I am seeing him on thursday maybe I should mention it. I don't want him to think I am a hypochondriac but it is bothering me. I cant seem to eat anything at the moment. I will keep you up to date. Cheers Karen "
