Hi all. I am new here and hope someone can help...any advice is greatly appreciated. I got sick 3 weeks ago with what the doctor told me initially was a viral illness. A few days later I was doing worse and he started me on biaxin for what he thought was a bacterial infection ontop of the virus. I immediately started taking probiotics, and Vitamin C,zinc and I have also added vitamin B12. All of this was for the virus/immunity etc. Within about 2 days of starting the biaxin I started having diarrhea (yellow) and nausea and vomitting (I attributed all of this to the antibiotic). Long story sorry....anyway the nausea and vomitting stopped within days of finishing the biaxin, diarrhea stopped a week after finishing. I still have mid abdominal pain, some nausea,gas/belching, back pain, feeling like I am choking and like my airways are closing/short of breath, cough and hoarse throat. I also get flushing of my face. I saw another doctor yesterday and she thinks this is gerd. She started me on nexium, and did some general lab work, chest xray (but not abdominal?) etc. I have been eating very little (toast, yogurt, bananas and rice for 3 weeks). I feel crappy and don't even know where to begin. I have been overweight for a long time and have had some heartburn, but why all of a sudden these terribly intense symptoms? Any one read anything here that I should eliminate? I am also on some medications and I have read here that some meds may worsen gerd, but have been on these for a long time ramipril (for BP), metformin and spironalactone. Sorry for the ramble, but would be happy to hear anyone's opinion about this. Thanks so much.

My GERD symptoms came on suddenly too, although I had no other health problems. The first symptom was that choking feeling you describe. Later I developed a sore throat, abdominal pain and heartburn. I tried several other PPI's before I started Nexium. Since I have been on Nexium it has made a huge difference along with dietary changes. Nexium will take a few days or more to become effective. I hope it helps relieve your symptoms.

Hi, I was wondering if the docs told you what type of GERD you had?
After undergoing the same chest x-rays andspeaking w/ both my ENT and Gastro internalists who both diagnosed my GERD they told me that I need a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) like Protonix which I was on for a year to control my GERD along w/ diet change. From your post it sounds like you are taking an H2 Blocker which is used to neutralize stomach acid rather then prevent it from being re-released back into the esophagus like a PPI does. From what I understand from the ENT and GI H2 Blockers can cause more cramping and nausea from the chemicals that are in the pills that cause the stomach acid to be neutralized. My mom also has GERD and use a prescribed H2 Blocker and has said the same thing. Also is there a way that you could could back on the vitamins or use one at a time and then gradually add another? I also used to take B12 vitamins and I agree that it does yellow up everything not to mention the gross taste use to upset my stomach as well. For me the problem w/ vitamins is the solubility factor as well as the amount of iron. Taking too many vitamins at once can make it hard for the body to digest them, not to mention too much iron in the body can be hard to take as well. Not sure if it will help but my ENT and GI recommend that I use a wedge plliow, cut out fatty, greasy or acidic foods like: tomatoes, fried foods, grapefruits and cut out high caffeinated products like tea, coffee, colas (clear colas are okay though if watered down), peppermint, cinnamon, spicy foods/or beverages and limit my intake of salts and oils like butter and margarine and try using olive oil instead. I also have OAS (oral allergy syndrome) which means I can't tolerate many types of fresh melons like cantaloupe, honey dew, watermelon, nor fresh veggies like cauliflower or molded cheeses like bleu cheese b/c they all make my throat, lips and tongue tingle and swell. . For me, it also helps to stop eating up 2 hours before bedtime and being more careful about what I eat for breakfast since all that stomach acid has been laying to one side if that makes sense. Eating less heavier meals and eating an extra snack also gives me some extra relief. Well GOOD LUCK :D
