...i had been reading journals from mothers and i noticed that their babies have been diagnosed to have g6pd months after birth, i think the mothers should be informed with the newborn screening just after birth...some hospitals here in the philippines made it a protocol and its good thing because mothers, especially first time moms like me would be aware with the sickness particulary with those ... -

Well, I hope to say that I can consider this goal accomplished. I got a call from my mother in law yesterday saying that my stbx was picked up yesterday and that he was going to jail. The way I figure it, if he's in jail, I don't have to worry about talking to him. I won't answer his letters or his phone calls, so I hope that he gets the message. Thanks everybody!!!

Hey Everyone,
Just wanted to let you know that I won't be around for a couple of days. I'll be having my surgery tomorrow. Thank you all for being here for me, you'll never know what it means to me to have people to talk to. I'll get back to you all in a few days when I recover. Hope that I won't be in too much pain. G6PD Deficiency Information
Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is an X-linked recessive hereditary disease featuring nonimmune hemolytic anemia in response to a number of causes. The classic allergy to consumption of broad beans has led to the commonly used term favism, derived from the Italian name of the broad bean (fava).
The most important measure is prevention - avoidance of the drugs and foods that cause hemolysis. Vaccination against some common pathogens (e.g. hepatitis A) may prevent infection-induced attacks.
In the acute phase of hemolysis, blood transfusions might be necessary, or even dialysis in acute renal failure. Blood transfusion is an important symptomatic measure, as the transfused red cells are generally not G6PD deficient.
Some patients benefit from removal of the spleen (splenectomy), as this is an important site of red cell destruction. Folic acid should be used in any disorder featuring a high red cell turnover. Although vitamin E and selenium have antioxidant properties, their use does not decrease the severity of G6PD.
