Hi - I'm new to this forum and new to fructose malabsorption. I have not been formally diagnosed, but after months and years of digestive problems, I think I finally found the reason. Through some elimination and trial and error, I've learned that fructose does not agree with me. I was keyed into this when I ate an apple several months ago and nearly vomited. Since then, I could not tolerate apples, grapes, mangos, orange juice, syrup, soda, etc. - but for some reason did not have a problem with grapefruit or oranges, and certain other foods that didn't seem to fit into a logical group. I have been previously diagnosed with gastritis, IBS, and gastroparesis. I have tried acid reducing medicines and eliminating acidic foods, adding fiber to my diet, etc. All of which confused and even sickened me more. This is the only thing that seems to work and seems to fit, and since I've started I have not experienced any stomach upset at all, which is a shock considering I was in the bathroom with diarrhea every morning and afternoon for 6 months straight.
My first question is - how do you all deal with breakfast? I can't have dairy (I'm lactose intolerant) and eggs make me run to the bathroom half a minute after eating them (ever since I had my gall bladder removed - not sure why), and wheat seems to affect me somewhat I'm finding out - not to mention all breakfast food tends to be loaded in sugar, most of which is fructose. So, what do you all eat for breakfast? So far, it's been grapefruit, grapefruit, grapefruit. It's fine right now, but I will get bored of it soon, I'm sure! Thanks! Posted on 06/03/09, 08:06 am |

I too and fructose/lactose intolerant and don't do eggs! Breakfasts are the most difficult. I can eat Rice Chex or corn chex with rice milk and sprinkle sliced almonds on top. Sometimes I have leftover chicken from the previous night's dinner. I tried "cold cuts" but none of them are "clean" enough. So I eat lightly often throughout the day. Peanut butter is a good filler! Rolaids makes a multi symptom chewable with simethcone and I have found if provides relief! Can't do whole wheat but plain. bleached flour is ok. I pretty much do everything homemade - takes a lot of time and forethought, but I feel better! No dairy is almost more difficult than no fructose because dairy is in so many things. Breyer's makes a Lactose Free Ice Cream which is a treat on ocassion!

Try unsweetened puffed rice, Cream of Rice, or unsweetened oatmeal. Dextrose can be added for sweetening and may actually help your digestion.
If absolutely all wheat products affect you--pasta, crackers, everything--you may alos have fructans intolerance (not infrequently accompanies DFI). Try unsweetened all-rye crackers or flatbread and see if it agrees with you. If all grains fail, try potatoes. Try a microwaved baked potato for breakfast. Have you even considered seeing a doctor about this?

I forgot the part about lactose intolerance. Try unsweetened soy milk. If you can't tolerate that, try Rice Dream Original Classic, which was sweetened only with brown rice syrup the last time I looked. It will do to moisten cereal anyway.

I have started eating oatmeal in the morning with a rye bun and peanut butter. My mother thinks it is ironic that I am eating oatmeal porridge because as a kid I could not stand it.
So, I boil water in the kettle, measure out about 3/4 c of water to which I add a bit of salt and 1/4 c quick oats. In the microwave I heat it to boiling - about 1 minute and then turn down the power and cook it for 2 or 3 more minutes. I use glucose to sweeten it and add lactose free milk. I find the protein from the peanut butter helps me last until lunch.

For fructose malabsorption, berries and bananas are OK, so when I am short of time I eat:
Puffins cereal with soymilk and fresh berries (blueberries or strawberries) When I have a little more time I make oatmeal (just oats and water, not rocket science) and add wheat-free granola and/or nuts for texture, fresh berries or bananas, and sometimes soymilk. Breakfast is my favorite! Find a few cereals that are wheat-free...not a lot but they are out there.
