New to group - Fructose Friendly Foods

Hi.
I'm new to the group. My 5 year old has DFI, we are getting used to it. It has been about 6 months since we got the diagnosis. As you all know, most people really do not understand it "You mean your kid can't have apple juice, but can drink Kool-Aid?!" (I make it with dextrose).

What I am thinking about, is starting a line of foods for people with "Fructose Issues". I have a friend who is a dietrican and we are working on recipes. What foods should I make? Ketchup? Applesauce? What do you think? If you could go to a store like Trader Joe's / Whole Foods/ etc. and buy something made for people with DFI/HFI, what would it be?

" I think that's a great idea, I can't imagine there are enough of us in any one place to support an entire store, but getting your foods into a place like Trader Joes would be great. I like to see Chicken and Beef broth that I didn't have to make myself, also Cream of Mushroom and Celery soups.Lists say we can have boullion, but I have yet to find any. I try to stay away from dyes and preservatives and natural flavorings. I tend to gravitate towards foods that have short ingredient lists. Worchershire Sauce, Soy Sauce, Alfredo Sauce, Hoisen and Oyster Sauce. As you can see, anything that would impart flavor or make putting together a soup, etc. easier. I am also confused about Basalmic Vinegar, I read that some are ok, (same as boullion)but I don't know which, or how to tell. Do you happen to know why soy is ok and soy sauce is not. I hope your son is doing well, with a mom as motivated as you are, and a friend who is a dietician, he's sure to thrive. "

" It's me again. I thought of something else, low fat foods would be good. Ways to use and foods/baked goods that use dextrose. Dried Fruits, Cranberry Juice sweetened with dextrose. I'm really getting fed up with making everything I eat, and eating the same things over and over. "

" THANKS FOR ANSWERING !!! If all I have read is true -- there should be a HUGE market for Fructose-Friendly foods in a few years. Think of gluten free foods 10 years ago...

In regards to what I chose food wise is similar to how I'm voting in the upcoming election -- I chose based on which is the "less bad" -- regular ketchup with HFCS OR sugar-based ketchup. Ideally, I would like to make ketchup with dextrose. I was just thinking about making cranberry juice with dextrose. Since my guy has a dairy allergy, too -- there is not alot of beverage choices for him. "

" Your idea sounds great. I would want anything sweet--desserts, drinks, treats, etc.

I want to start experimenting with baking. Maybe I could come up with a recipe book, since no one seems to have done that yet. "

" I have started using more glucose instead of regular sugar. You can buy it at a health food store. I think I paid about 4 dollars for a 1 kg bag. I have tried it in oatmeal cookies with brown sugar (br sug is not that great for me). The cookies were good but different - more chewy and sticky on the cookie sheet. I also have been taking a glucose tablet with food I am not sure about. However, the tablet doesn't work with onions and garlic. They give me a severe headache. I also eat sweet potato. Despite its name, it has very low fructose/glucose ratio. In Canada, I found 1 soup I can eat with no difficulty - Campbell's Soups ready to eat New England Clam Chowder - it has potato in it, too. Another food I have been enjoying is rye crisp bread. Rye does have fructans in it but it seems that it doesn't cause too many issues. I am interested in trying to make my own. Heads up on sushi - sushi rice is mixed with fructose to make it more sticky. I now avoid sushi. Rice and russet potatoes are supposed to be okay. I eat red potatoes and don't notice much with that.

It is a most frustrating diet but I think my mood is better and I notice when I do eat something I shouldn't that my mood gets worse.

take care
Solson "

" I love Trader Joes because I can find foods that do work for me! I was told to write the Corporation often with requests and they willl oblige as best they can. The best thing is to arrive at any grocery store - not hungry - and take time to read the labels. My local store nutritionist was super helpful and walked the aisles with me, at no charge, pointing out what was food for our kind of diet.. Regarding beverages, Crystal Light is ok, most diet sodas are ok provided they are made with apartame.! Jones Sodas are made with cane sugar. Canada Dry makes a flavored Seltzer which has neither calories nor artificial sweeteners. For a treat, Jello also is ok and if your diet is non-dairy you can make it with water and Trader Joe's soy coffee creamer.! "
