Hello I am new to this group. I hope to get some answers and find some support about what i was told today. I was told to stay away from anything with apples in it. I had a reaction to some apple Jelly the other night. My throat closed up and almost sent me into an asthma attack. This has also happened when I have been eating apples before but I thought it was just my asthma. Today I was told that it could cause my whole body to shut down. Is anyone here allergic to apples?

" I have a reaction to anything grown with a glutamate containing fertilizer.
You should find out if it is really the Apple you are reacting to or somthing the apple has absorbed, such as the glutamate ferilizer, or a pesticide that could have been absorbed.

Are you allergic to anything else? "

" Hi,
I read a really interesting article about apple allergies in New Scientist a few weeks back. It seems that there is a line right through the middle of Europe and people are allergic to apples above and below the line in different ways. The line coincides with where a certain type of tree stops growing. The apple allergy is actually the body confusing apple proteins with plant proteins found in the different halves of europe (horizontal division through the top of Spain, Italy, Greece etc)). On one side of the line people are allergic to raw apples only, on the other side just the skin. Or something along those lines anyway. If you're interested in the details let me know and I'll scrounge around for the issue (its around here somewhere...).
So its not an uncommon allergy it seems. But you're in the USA, so...I don't know.
Anyway, good luck with it.
KC "

" Did you have testing for apples that came out positive? It may possibly be a preservative or the pectin used in the jelly "

" common allergy, severe form of oral allergy syndrome can end in anaphylaxis. bad luck there !

some people can tolerate well cooked apple, but cant eat raw, some can eat apples but not during tree pollen season..........

all different, but have to say that apples , although common are fairly easy to avoid.

any other problems with fruit or veg?

keep that asthma under control, and be ultra careful to avoid apples if asthma is flaring up. "

" I am! It is very strange, the only thing that bothers me is anything with raw apples. So stuff like apple sauce, apple juice, apple butter, do not bother me, but raw apples do. My lips swell up and my mouth becomes tingly. "
