My little one (almost 3) is brand new member of the peanut allergy family, and I am confused about natural flavoring. Her doctor said "beware" of natural flavoring, but almost everything I pick up in the store has natural flavoring!! Specifically, does anyone know if Hostess twinkies are safe? Those were always her favorite, but I dont know if we should stay away from them.

Do you really want to be feeding your child "flavourings" that are typically wheat derived & containg chemicals such as windshield washer fluid (propolene glycol)?
Make your own snacks - it's not that hard & you have control over what your child eats. Google "Natural" & "Artificial" flavourings and see what I mean Michael

Thank you for your comment. I can certainly keep her away from processed snacks. That part will get easier as time goes on, and I know they are typically unhealthy anyway, BUT there are plenty of other foods with "natural flavoring". You can't even pick up a box of macaroni with seeing that ingredient. It can be pretty overwhelming for a parent new to all of this.

Try organics, it is very easy to avoid "natural flavours". You just have to look a little bit harder (I assume that you live in an Urban area.

I don't think it is easy to avoid so-called 'natural' flavorings. Even at Whole Foods they abound. The problem is that anything that at one time was natural, even such things as insect casings, can be the starting point for a series of chemical processes after which the end result can be put into your food and listed as 'natural'. You don't know if it is a vanilla bean, or the output of a mad scientist in a lab.
I bet that Twinkies have peanut ingredients. You are going to have to shop at a natural store, or online. Good luck.

is he JUST allergic to peanuts? if so, i'm not really understanding why you need to avoid "natural flavoring". Usually thats for people who are allergic to wheat or glutin. maybe you should talk to the doctor and have him clarify WHY you need to stay away from that. But, if you do need to stay away from "natural flavorings" try looking up food for celiac disease. my friend has that and she can't have a lot of stuff. but i do know there is like 1 lunch meat she can eat and basically that and fresh meat, fruit and veggies.

As far as I know, she is just allergic to peanuts (and dogs, but that poses no fatal risks). I dont know why her doctor mentioned staying away from natural flavoring, unless she was just be overly cautious or thought i needed to be "scared". So peanuts are rarely used in natural flavorings?? I do feel better about that, although I will still be cautious.

Companies are required to put the top 8 allergens on their label. wheat, soy, milk, peanuts, eggs, and I forget the others. the problem with natural flavorings and "spices" is they may contain things that are not in the top 8 for me like onions, garlic white potatoes. if ever a question call the companies 1-800 number have the box and code ready.

I second or third calling the company to find out. I eat plenty of foods that say "natural flavorings", but I've called on the ones that seems suspect.

The term "natural flavoring" is usually a
euphamism for MSG, which is a neurotoxin. See this stie for more info: http://www.truthinlabeling.org

I think that you should take your child to an allergist to have a better understanding of what you are up against. I am in complete agreement with anyone that says to go organic. I know that I am allergic to wheat(found out by accident) and it is difficult without a proper diagnosis. I cant afford doctors right now and could be allergic to other things or I am just damaged goods already.
