Advice:
milk allergy?

Hi, i have been getting sick constantly for the last year or so... and things started to get particularly bad when i passed out at the start of this year and ended up in hospital. I have kinda noticed a connection between having things with dairy in it and being sick/ anxious. My doctors aren't really taking me seriously when i suggest a dairy allergy could be the problem so i'm kinda left to my own devices. I took all dairy out of my diet completely for a number of weeks and then tried putting it back in again this past weekend. Since then i have had terrible pain in my stomach and abdomin, bowel troubles, a serious increase in anxiety, really bad nausea, and when i throw up there is a lot of mucus, and the return of chest and breathing problems, getting really agitated and food cravings.

i guess i was just wondering if this sounds like a familar reaction to an allergy, and how is it possible to get tested when the symptoms don't occur straight away but over a couple of days? I guess i would like to have an official dignosis rather than coming up with one on my own, so i know it is legit. any advie would be appreciated!

thanks for your time,

em

" It sounds like you scored a bullseye with self-diagnosis. Your sound just like me, Miss Dairy Allergic 2000. It is actually typical for the reactions to be kind of unpredictable which is what kept me from getting tested for years and years -- I never made the connection. Unless you have an HMO and have to twist the doctor's arm to get a referral, just go to an allergist and ask to have the testing done. If you do have an HMO, I would tell that story to the doc. "

" You sound just like me to. I have been allergic to dairy since I was born and I am now 40. I get the same reactions that you do get. Its hard to be allergic to dairy because of all of the good food. Be carefull though, you maybe allergic to the processing the milk goes through when it is processed. My nephew is like that he can have it only straight from the cow and then cooled in fridge. I cant even have that. Good job on figuring this out. I hope this helps. You can drink like rice dream and substitue it for milk but I dont recommend goats milk. That tastes so nasty and I am talking from experience "

" Oh, I've got milk allergies big time! And lactose intolerance as well. I haven't had a glass of milk in twenty five years, at least. Sometimes I cheat and eat cheese or dip or something, and always pay for it in hives, stomach pains, mucous, irritability, etc. "

" You don't need to test further; you're allergic to it. I am too. Once in a great while I'll eat pizza with cheese or maybe a tablespoon of ice cream, but that's it. I get a reaction every time, but nothing as terrible as yours. I once asked my allergist if I was going any further harm by eating dairy so infrequently. She said I was. She said you can have it 999 times & be ok, but the 1,000th can kill you. You just never know how severe the reaction can be & which time will be the straw that broke the camel's back. If you use non-dairy coffee creamer, it has milk casein in it; same with non-dariy Cool Whip type stuff. Soy cheese also. You have to read labels so carefully & even then you'll sometimes get some unawares unless you never eat anything you haven't prepared yourself & who does that? I usually ask if I'm suspicious that something may contain dairy & hope I don't upset whoever made it. I wouldn't try to test it again with that severe of a reaction. I did that with carrots & ended up at the hospital when I retested just to be sure. Never again! "

" Hi, I had a small period of time when I couldn't have dairy I don't know why but my doctor didn't take me seriouse either I use to just feel sick or throw up it last for a month I think, but I replaced dairy with soya which is better for you than dairy and isn't fatening also I drank goats milk and ate goats cheese this is also easier for you to digest, maybe replacing dairy with these products and see how you feel then. " In a way there's no point in getting tested, as the other poster said, because there's no treatment but simply avoiding the stuff, and if you get some by mistake to take some Benadryl. "
