Going to give up sugar for a month!

Hey everyone,
I've decided that starting next week I'm going to give up refined/added sugar for a month. It'll be difficult, my drug of choice is chocolate in all forms (ice-cream, choccy bars, cake). I hope that by the end of the month I'll not only have kicked a sugar addiction but that it hopefully won't enter back into my life after that too because I would've learnt to live without it. I binge every Friday and Sat night on these sweet treats, never turn down dessert and use sugar to self medicate. I'm a little freaked out to say the least! Any adive from anyone that's done it before? Have any good sugar free recipes? (of any kind, although ill probably not even have sugar free dessert as it'll make me want the real deal) Any side effects? What have you done to help you get through difficult times and distract you from wanting the sweet stuff? Appreciate the help everyone!x Posted on 08/31/09, 07:08 pm |

You can do it!!! I gave up sugar once for almost a year!!
Make sure, if it is ok with your eating plan, to have plenty of sweet fruit---I find that the natural sugar in fruit doesn't bother me like added sugar. there are sooo many sugar-free items----ice cream, cookies, etc. the only catch is that 1) some contain malitol, which can sometimes cause an upset stomach or more trips to the restroom, and 2) it is easy to overeat on any item, regardless of the sugar content and 3) aspartame and things like that can have a weird taste is certain items. when i would have a sugar craving, I would do sugar free ice cream bars (you can't really tell the difference). I gave up grains at the same time I gave up sugar, so i couldn't eat sugar free cookies or cereal. I did try some sugar free cheesecake---great taste, but my stomach didn't like it so much All in all, i would say experiment more with fresh fruits, and realize that sometimes sugar-free chocolate syrup in some low-fat milk can really help a chocolate craving, and sugar-free jelly and jams (no added aspartame) taste great! Another tip is try to aim for things that are sweetened with fruit juice, but not fake sugars----trader joes has good lower-sugar jams and jellies, you can buy canned fruit that is packed in its own juice, etc.

Ps....read the labels carefully---there are soooo many processed foods that have fructose in it that you would never expect to have sugar---like a zesty salad dressing! if you must buy processed foods ( I know that i buy bottled dressings all the time--just a fact of life, ya know?), try to aim for ones where sugar or high fructose corn syrup is not in the first 5 ingredients.
