I am new to the group and I am desperate for some support and guidance. I have been addicted to food all of my life. It has been getting worse and in the last year I have gained 50 pounds. I used to be able to maintain a healthy weight, but now it seems impossible. I am getting married next year and I want to start my new life without this debilitating addiction to food. Any words of wisdom?

Since this is a lifelong issue for you... have you received help with a therapist or nutritionist? I would suggest doing both. You really need to get to the root of why you are eating and you will need support as you make changes. Your upcoming wedding could be adding to the stress you are eating over. I would try to get off sugar and white flour, eat whole foods... not processed foods, but fresh fruits, veggies, lean chicken, etc. and don't remove all the fat from your diet or you will make yourself crazy. A nutritionist can set you up with a healthy/balanced food plan. This will give you the nutrition and energy you need and a structured plan to follow - a lifestyle change, not a diet. By talking to a therapist, you will hopefully find out why you do this and healthier ways of coping. Being on the Daily Strength is a great start.
good luck!

I agree with cal7. I would add writing in a journal. Along with a therapist or nutritionist, I suggest a support group...the right one. If you've tried support groups and gave up for one or two reasons, perhaps you can return.
I am a longtime member of OA (Overeaters Anonymous). I am also a member of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly). Why? because I use food for many reasons other than nutrition. Please keep posting, keep writing, and I know you will find out WHY you have gained 50 pounds. Overeating, addiction to food, I believe, is a life long journey. We are here for you.

Find a diet club that has a diet you can live on for a long period, it must also have a maintenance plan for when you arrive at your goal and a weekly weigh-in. Don't be shy of going to a club on your own, everyone is in the same boat. Lastly use your DS journal, join groups, talk to people by answering posts and making your own, chose DS friends by reading their journals and you will find friends to support you the days you are not at your diet group. I think its a wonderful idea to lose weight for your wedding and I think we would all like to see your wedding photo! Take the plunge - take care of yourself. Laraine xxx

Dear Julie-
Today is what you have. The notion that by the time you get married you'd like to "start your new life without this debilitating addiction" can be a set up for failure. My sense of this, as a life-long food addict like yourself, is that I'll never not be a food addict just because I've lost weight, remain active journal daily and so on. The wolf will ALWAYS be at the door. This site is a God send for me. There is love and unconditional acceptance here. That love, wherever you find it, wherever you believe you're worthy of it and accept it, will get us ALL through! Bless you, my friend!
