I have some books which talk about sugar being the root of food addictions and that by giving up foods which have sugar then the cravings will go. Has anyone tried this? It includes foods such as bread and pasta as well which produce sugar cravings and even some fruits.

yes, sugar and white flour play a definite role in Ed if you ask me. OA - Overeaters Anonymous - is based on 'no flou, no sugar' food plans. Manufacturers highly refine these products and strip them on their nutritional value. I avoid both as much as possible. I have switched to whole grain breads and such, I am much more satisfied - full longer since there is more fiber - and it is more nutritious if you select a good brand. Sugar includes a lot of words other than suger - manufacturers try to fool us. Read the labels and try to avoid high sugar products, foods w/high fructose corn syrup, highly processed foods, etc. I had to switch to a mostly organic diet but I feel healthier, am more satisfied and my cravings for the junk have gone away. It took me years to get to this point. I try to 'eat clean' - eat foods in their most natural form, it is easy to eliminate a lot of the junk from our food plan that way. oh and fruit in it's natural state is just fine. aim for 3-4 servings a day and you should be ok with that even though there is natural sugar in there.

i remember going for a whole year without sugar/flour/refined carbs and it was a lot easier with the cravings. it really makes a difference. it's just a matter of going through the initial "withdrawl" from refined carbs that's tough. i'm going to try and do this again. it has been a while since i tried to go without unhealthy food.

I think it is true, but for me personally, when I deprive myself I end up cracking and having binges. I think the feeling of "off limits" food makes me want it more, and adds guilt. So it all depends on you. Give it a try if you think it will help.

We have been off of sugar, white flour and hydrogenated oil for 3 years. I use stevia (has no calories) and other natural sweeteners instead. If you are interested in them just let me know and I send you a list. We still eat most everything we did before. I can even make health deserts with very low calories!! Even healthy fudge!@! As you can see I don't deprive myself of anything I just make it healthy.
Health and Blessings,

I belong to Food Addicts Anonymous and our basic premise is that sugar, flour and wheat are highly addictive substances that cause blood sugar to spike thus creating cravings. I have been free of those substances--and that includes all flours, sweeteners etc.---for 2 1/2 years or so. Tons of energy, lost lots of weight and food no longer controls my life. The sense of freedom is wonderful! I read various eating disorder websites every now and then and hear the pain that people are going through. I know there is a way out.

thanks for the advice, I tried it this morning but at my local baby group a big tin of biscuits came out and I felt rude saying no and they looked so nice. I think its other people that is difficult and need some strategies of what to say to refuse politely and avoid temptation at same time

in your mom group, just say 'no, thank you... none for me today'. they can't make you eat something, it is your choice and it is ok to say no.

Yes sugar can cause bacterial overgrow or even candida or yeast infection in big quantities.
This in turn will lead to more cravings including sugar and brads, but you better don`t remove all breads bc it can imbalance nervous system. I had strick carb free diet for 3 months and got this addiction to all foods.
