Does anyone know much about OA? I did go to one meeting and spoke with a sponsor last night on the phone. They seem to really stress the importance of an eating/food plan. I'm scared that if I follow a set food plan I may be more likely to binge because I will feel deprived.

" I don't like someone telling me what to eat, and when to eat it, so I do not know anything about oa. What works best is just exercise. I know that sounds a little, well, a little redundent, but it is what helps me the most. "

" OA is a program of suggestion. YOU choose a food plan that you can live with. You ID ur trigger foods and choose to omitt them from your daily life...A sponsor is a guide.U choose one that U feel can lead you thru the steps. A sponsor is not the food police...It is my experience that you learn to live the 12 steps after working them thru a few times. OA is an awesome program of one addict helping another of which I am one. Check out my profile for a little bit more info about my journey that includes OA.

Prayers for Peace,
Nicol "

" I think the food plan is more about the PLAN than the FOOD. Planning out what you're going to eat is the important part. Its very important that you don't feel deprived. I'd be very leary of anyone who is trying to tell you WHAT to eat. "

" Oh I feel like a "Melvin" by no means to I have all the anwsers...Again my experience has shown me that there are a number of foods that cause physical cravings in many...For a long time I would not surrender to the fact that I can't tolerate wheat flour...I had to live and learn that refined carbs and added sugar took down every single time...Yet for real OA does not dictate what you can and can't eat..It makes suggestions...Some meetings called HOW meetings subscribe to a specific food plan...There are NonHOW meetings....Please don't hate all dogs, cuz one bit you...

" I'm having the exact same issue. I attended my first OA meeting on Monday and really liked it... but I'm not crazy about the food plan either- just because I used to be anorexic. Once I start keeping a food journal, it reminds me of when I would obsessively count my calories (with zero being the target)... once I see how much I write down, even if to someone else it doesn't seem like much, I feel fat. I think that I will want to rebel against myself if I try to restrict too much. Really, I'm just trying to lose my obsession over food, and I almost feel like OA makes me obsess even more. I'm going to allow my "off limit" foods every so often, as long as they don't trigger a huge binge. I don't know what to tell ya!!
Good luck! "

" Amylynne, I complete agree with you. I think that I binged for a week after that first meeting and speaking with someone over the phone. She was so hardcore about cutting out certain foods that it just stressed me out! And naturally I rebel. And when I told her that happens to me, she said "well I have to ask people how bad they really want this" That just offended me.
I don't always like to depend on meds but my Dr. did just put me on Prozac and Wellbutrin. Although anorexia and bulimia are a contraindication to Wellbutrin, that was so long ago for me. But the 2 meds are working great. I'm using them as a stepping stone to get the most out of my therapy right now. As I progress in that then I can lower/end the meds. "

" Please don't rule out OA...Really believe me...It can be a God send..One just needs to find the right sponsor for them and work out a food plan that works for them...It can be as easy as my abstinence = refraining from COEing. I'm sorry that I might seem like a pain...I just know program saved my life...Please read the OA 12 & 12 b4 u rule it out...Just like there are swick people there are also unhealthy meetings...

Prayers for Peace,
Nicol "
