I joined a gym yesterday! It's been years since I've belonged. I hope to get back in shape and finally kick the deadly habit of lighting up please offer any support you can!

" I just quit smoking on Tuesday. I bought a treadmill a month ago and started running. I found that when I work out, I would go hours without smoking. I am using Chantix to help with the quit, but I can tell you the best think for me so far has been running. The rush is great when i am stressed and craving a cigarrette. There is an incredible support group here for quitting smoking, check it out before you quit, you will find allot of great tips. Just post in the discussion forum there, I am certain you will find all the help you need. Good luck, and congrats on the gym membership! "

" Woo hoo Calmpaal!! I never had the cig problem (dodged that bullet) but regarding keeping yourself on track at the gym now that you've joined:

Keep a freshly packed gym bag in the car. That way you have one less excuse for not showing up if you're on the fence about going.

Alternate your workouts between cardio and resistance training, make sure your cardio workouts aren't always the same.

Listen to your body. There's a difference between tiring the muscle and pain that means an injury. Always better to err on the side of caution.

Take advantage of any free orientation, training and/or classes offered at your gym. Correct form gets you to your goals faster and prevents injury.

Rest days are important. Take them without guilt.

Don't try to change everything all at once. Make one small change and persist with it for a month - then add your next change. The wisdom from 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is that changes you keep for a 30 day period are more likely to become permanent life changes. Focus on one change at a time and celebrate that success rather than always looking at the whole mountain of what you haven't done yet (including the smoking cessation).

Keep us posted! "
