HI everyone,
I am new to the group. I recently joined a gym in my town and am wanting to lose weight and be healthy. We recently had a small family reunion for my husband side of the family and I was mortified by the pictures I saw of myself. I have never been this big. I have had 2 children in the last 3 years along with a few medical issues and on multiple medications, one of which made me gain 40 lbs due to one of the side effects being hungry all the time...ugh! Now, I am off that med and working toward a new me!! I just need some encouragement and motivation at times in order to stay on track!! Posted on 10/18/12, 06:13 pm |

Hi! Have you tried out your new gym membership yet? What did you do there? When I first went to my gym I started slow. I would work out for maybe 45 minutes. Over time, I increased the amount of time I spent in the gym as well as varying my routine and intensity. I soon began to enjoy it. The one thing I bought was an iPod shuffle (the little one that clips to your shirt) so I could listen to the kind of music that I wanted to. It made cardio that much better being motivated to my own tunes. Start slow then build. Treat yourself to a personal training session. You don't need a trainer to be with you for each workout, just have one evaluate you and to put a routine together for you and to show you how to use the equipment properly. Get together with them every 2-3 months to revise and intensify your program. You can do it!

I can imagine with small children sometimes getting to the gym is difficult. Can you go for walks with the children (I suppose that would be difficult with 2 though)?
You can also try and play active games with the children? These are 'sneaky' ways of getting in additional exercise. I am not sure whether you cook for your family, but having young children can be a motivation to cook healthy meals which all of you can enjoy. I am not sure what you health issues are, but factor them in to your plan (if they may hamper ability to exercise or slow down weight loss) so that if you are not well you have a plan to try and keep you going (if this is possible). Sounds like you are doing great and are being realistic, so that you can make long term changes and not a 'quick fix weight loss'! Keep going strong!
