Getting in shape after baby

It's been a month since I had my son now and even though I haven't got the go ahead from the doctor to exercise, I want to start thinking of a plan. I go in two weeks for that 'go ahead'. I've never been one to exercise really. I've done some jogging here and there but nothing consistant. While I know what exercise is, I don't know the best way to start or what to do. That's where I'm hoping you guys and gals can help me. :)

I'm 5' 6" and weigh 165. I am breastfeeding right now and don't want to rush anything that will lower my supply. I have a 3 year old and a one month old to take care of so I can't run to the gym or go out jogging. I need things that I can do here at my house. Since I'm breastfeeding I can't lower my calorie intake too much. My weight number is not so much the problem, I don't care what it is as much as my pant size number. I'm currently wearing a size 15, some of that is extra cushion and some is wide hips. I have the flap under my arms so I know I need to tone them. My tummy obviously but I understand that it is going to take time. My thighs are also a bit chunky.

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks!!!

" Congratulations on your new addition!
I used DVD & VCR at home for mat exercises or aerobics. Just start out slowly, gradually increasing time & intensity. Holding your tummy in can be done anywhere, anytime, & kegal exercises, too. On ebay can you can find cheap dvds targeted for new moms. "

" Walmart has mini trampolines for $30. Hand weights. Crunches, reverse crunches, flutter kicks, jumping jacks. There are so many things that you can do at home! "

" Hey girl
SO my twins are 18 months now and are still nursing. I had a really hard time exercising while nursing full time. I couldn't keep my supply at a level fit for twins and I lost way too much weight, so I am just getting back on the band wagon (Still trying to find time!) Not to scare you but start slow until you figure out how much your supply can handle. I think the best thing is to incorporate your kids into the workout. Walking around the block pushing a stroller can be tough! And I always did push up with them laying under me and when I would go down I would kiss them, they would giggle, it was great. I am a huge fan of the balance ball. Great for toning abs, arms, I do squats with it.
Just keep in mind that while you are nursing you are going to retain about 10# of fat around your belly and arms simply because your body is using that to make sure you have enough for baby to eat too. Go slow a 30 minute walk 10 push ups and 25 crunches can do wonders. Right now your body belongs to baby, but the exercise will help keep you sane. PM me any time. Perhaps we can make a club for nursing exercisers!

Suzy "

" I love the idea of exercising with the kids, that is a big plus.

Suzy, that sounds like a good idea. We might just have to do that. "

" I am also a mother of a 4 year old, 3 year old and have a 6 month old. If you think you are able to do things at home videos are a great choice. I have found that if you are not experienced with exercise you probably will not be motivated to exercise at home without some instruction (tape) because you aren't sure what to do. You can also find other things to do at the house (house work) that might stop you from exercising. If you have a good place to walk a double stroller is great exercise and you can find them on craigs list for pretty cheap. It is great for the kids to get fresh air. You can get a gym membership and usually the babies can go in at 6 weeks. I found this was one of the only times I got a real break during the day and classes are great to take. Also nothing beats strength training and a gym is a great place to do this. I also lost all my baby weight plus an extra 5 pounds after 2 months and it never affected my breast supply. I am still nursing! "

" Well, I went looking for info and found some interesting data!
Apparently, exercise can increase the supply.
This article mentions something about bitter milk after exercise, so you can always feed before doing your exercising.

there are lots more, but that should give you enough info to start you off.
Exercise is good, start off slowly, build up to more intense or vigorous plans. As simple as walks is a great start. "

" Great articles. I found if I ate often enough it helped and when I felt too hungry I probably needed to eat! Sparkpeople.com and fitday.com are great websites that can help with calorie intake, exercise examples, etc. Just remember to add 500 calories extra for nursing but if you want to lose some weight slowly decreasing your needed intake will help. Of course if you add in exercising you can all add in more calorie. To lose a pound a week you need to decrease your caloric intake by 500 calories a day or 3500 a week. If you wanted to go slower just lower your need by 250 a day and that will be a half pound a week. Good luck you can do it! Don't forget to take time for yourself. You are gonna be busy and will need a break to feed yourself back up! "

" Thanks for all the links! I have hypothyroidism and was on a dosage that was too high so I have already been battling a lower supply so that is where a lot of my concern has come from. My dosage was changed so I'm hoping that by the time I get the go ahead from my doctor everything will be balanced out for me.

I found a program that is for beginners that I feel that I can easily do while still tending to both kids. Some of the exercises even include the kids.

Thanks to all! "
